1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti takes “Best In Show” honor at Pebble Beach

Article by Christian A., on August 18, 2014

Last weekend was a crazy one for Ferrari as the Italian manufacturer unveiled its 458 Speciale Spider at 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, while a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was sold for a staggering $38 million. And the good news continued as a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti took the “Best In Show” honor.

This is for the first time in the 64-year history of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance when a Ferrari wins this award. The model is powered by a 4.5-liter V12 engine that generates 328 bhp and it is owned by Jon Shirley of Medina, Washington, a well-known car collector.

As expected, the vehicle has quite a history as it was first ordered by film director Roberto Rosselini, a very important Ferrari customer who also owned models such as the 166, 212, 250 Mille Miglia. Moreover, Rosselini owned not one, but two 375 MMs.

At first, the vehicle was actually a Pinifarina-bodied competition spyder, had the chassis number 0402AM and was painted in the well-known Maranello Rosso colour. Rosselini smashed the front-end of the car in a tree and he was forced to bring the vehicle back to the factory.

The body of the car wasn’t saved but the chassis was sent to Scaglietti&C in Modena who spent an year to design the new body as he didn’t use any sketches or drawings. The result was unique and the 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti continues to be an amazing vehicle. [source: Ferrari]
