As you may know already Ford is the leader in tough trucks and in order to sustain its reputation unveiled today the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT, a high-performance off-road truck, a new vehicle built for desert off-road racing. The new truck features a new distinctive grille with the Ford name carved into it, a new front bumper, vented hood, new extended fenders, functional hood extractors, fender extractors with SVT logo and new FOX Racing Shox.
For better stability the vehicle is with 7 inches wider than the standard F-150 truck, this difference being marked by the designers with distinctive marker lamps.
Under the hood we have a 5.4-liter V8 engine, found also on the standard F-150, that is capable to deliver 320 hp and 528 Nm of torque (390 lb.-ft.). But don't be sad because according to the manufacturer a new 6.2-liter V8 engine will be available after launch which will increase even more the performances of the vehicle.
If you think developing a high-performance off-road truck is mostly about the horsepower, think again as it’s really about the suspension. The F-150 SVT Raptor doesn't disappoint, with 13.4 inches of usable travel in the rear suspension and 11.2 inches in the front.
Cars meant to run on the highway could boast all they want of unparalleled horsepower. Horsepower is definitely a concern when running in flat and paved roads, but when going up or down rough roads, the output has to be paired with an excellent suspension system.
Suspension and horsepower definitely come in combo with the new F-150 SVT Raptor. According to Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer for Ford SVT, they have given a facelift to the suspension system in the new F-150 SVT Raptor.
Hameedi states that the team had done away with the old axle, and put in a new one for this model. This means that the suspension for the front area of the off-road vehicle is now totally new, with 11.2 inches of usable travel.
Hameedi also said that the new SVT Raptor had its A arm, tie rod and half-shaft joints replaced. With the new suspension system, the SVT Raptor is more stable and handles better in rough roads. Drivers will barely feel the bumps and roughness when driving in unstable roads, Hameedi said, thanks to the new suspension.
Of course, the engineer assured fans that the F-150 SVT Raptor’s performance will not be limited to making rough road travel very comfortable. Hameedi said that the new Raptor’s on-road handling remains unparalleled. The chief engineer said that this was made possible by collaborating with several experts in on-road driving.
Specifically, the team gave the F-150 SVT Raptor the unique distinction of being the first off-road vehicle to be fitted with Fox Racing Shox’s internal bypass technology. This technology enables the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor to be more stable the longer it is driven. Rounding out the excellent features of the new F-150 SVT Raptor are all terrain tires from BF Goodrich.
This particular tire has been customized specifically for the dual nature of the F-150 SVT Raptor’s duties. Both the rubber fabric and the interior of the tires have been altered to fit the off-road and on-road requirements of the SVT Raptor.
The 35-inch tires are then paired with a sidewall and a 17-inch cast aluminum wheel. These features make sure that the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor will be resilient enough to withstand the rigors of driving in even the most difficult road environments.
