Audi’s British segment revealed that the new generation 4.2-litre V8 FSI petrol engine has been added to the R8 Spyder range, which already has the 5.2-litre V10 FSI variant in its lineup.
The new unit meets EU5 emissions standards with the use of a new recuperation system that saves energy during coasting and braking. It offers an increased 430 PS output (formerly 420PS), with a maximum torque of 430Nm.
R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI Quattro, equipped with both the standard six-speed manual transmission and the optional six-speed S tronic automated manual, can accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in only 4.8 seconds, and reach a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h).
According to a company statement, “the electrohydraulically controlled hood, which opens the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro to the elements in 19 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph, blends harmoniously into the advanced aluminum and carbon fiber composite body shell’s dramatic lines.”
Audi also that when lowered, it folds like a Z beneath the automatically activated cover of its storage compartment above the V8 engine. Audi added that the heated glass window, which is distinct from the fabric hood, is lowered into the bulkhead.
At the touch of a button, this can be independently raised and lowered, with the top up or down. Standard equipment includes an additional wind deflector that can be fitted into the bulkhead behind the seats in two easy steps.
The 4.2-litre V8 FSI variant boasts heating and electric adjustment for the Fine Nappa leather-trimmed seats. It also features Bluetooth mobile phone preparation using innovative seatbelt-mounted microphones. Metallic paint is also added over and above the R8 V8 specification.
Order books are now open for the new R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI Quattro. The six-speed manual version is priced at GBP95,545 OTR while the six-speed R tronic automated manual is priced at GBP100,855. Deliveries will start in January 2011.
