2011 BMW 335d gets the ‘Diesel Car of the Year’ award

Article by Christian A., on April 26, 2011

Readers of “The Diesel Driver” have voted the 2011 BMW 335d as the “Diesel Car of the Year” at the New York International Auto Show. BMW has made some diesel vehicles that are far from being boring. For example, BMW has developed the 200hp 123d that’s nearly as fast as a Golf GTI but is as attractive as any other 1-Series coupe, or diesel 5-Series. It’s the first diesel variant that Top Gear has ever put on their track.

The 2011 BMW 335d was named as the winner after votes from 43 countries were submitted. The 335d was chosen by 29.6% of the people polled, with 83% of those votes were from the U.S. Paul Ferraiolo, Manager – Product Planning and Strategy, said that the 335d truly is “changing the way Americans feel about diesel.”

He added that BMW Advanced Diesels are the “embodiment of BMW EfficientDynamics.” Each year, he readers of the Diesel Driver vote on the Diesel Car of the Year and choose the top three diesel automobiles available in the U.S.

The choices for the 2011 Diesel Car of the Year include 12 passenger vehicles and SUVs. The criteria include fuel economy, greenhouse gas emissions, performance, handling, styling, comfort, and the overall package. BMW said that the momentum of 335d sales continues in 2011 like in the first quarter of 2011. Sales have increased 34% over the same period last year. This comes after the 335d reported a gain of 130% for calendar year 2010 compared to 2009.

BMW is always about delivering maximum power and offering supreme efficiency. A good example of this is the first Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance. This system is perfect when it comes to having the motoring refinement and driving dynamics of premium cars and combined with the latest and strictest of standards as it relates to lowering emissions and being eco-friendly. It is powered by the inline-six 3.0-liter diesel engine that delivers excellent power and torque and it the most economical and fuel-efficient in its segment.

By utilizing the Variable Twin Turbo Technology, what happens is that a small turbocharger activates when running at low engine speeds. Due to the low inertia, it develops extra power and boost, without any delay, as a response even to the smallest of movement in its gas pedal. Once the speed starts to increase, the larger turbocharger activates which can deliver peak torque at 425 lb.-ft. at only 1,750 rpm.

Helping control the relationship between these turbochargers is the electronic high-performance engine control unit. Aside from the Variable Twin Turbo Technology, the BMW Advanced Diesel is equipped with a number of new technical highlights like the third-generation common-rail direct fuel injection and aluminum crankcase.

These same technologies have first been shown in 2007. With the use of the precise precision-quality piezo-injectors, it is possible to provide even the most precise amount of fuel to the combustion chambers using the smallest volume possible of pre-injection.

With the third-generation system, the injection process is ensured to be clean and even optimized when it comes to operational smoothness, fuel consumption, and emissions figures. It is because of all of these different qualities that the 3.0-liter diesel engine with the Variable Twin Turbo has managed to win the highly celebrated International Engine of the Year Award. It has in fact won this award multiple times, more compared to any other prize.

While this same engine is already equipped in different models in Europe, the brand hopes to expand its global success story with the BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance. During the 2008 NAIAS, the BMW 335d was equipped with the Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance that could deliver maximum power at 265 hp with top torque at 425 lb.-ft. This alone proves its qualities but its road performance solidifies this with acceleration at 0 to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds with average city fuel economy at 23 mpg and average highway city fuel economy at 33 mpg.

Making its debut as well in Detroit is the BMW X5 xDrive35d. Similar to the 335d, being equipped with the BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance means that the X5 xDrive35d provides a sporting character. It also stands out as a Sports Activity Vehicle that offers high torque and contains qualities that make it apt for long-distance motoring. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is possible in 7.2 seconds with average fuel economy city at 19 mpg and average fuel economy highway at 25mpg.
