2011 Dodge Caliber Mopar Edition introduced in South Africa

Article by Christian A., on May 14, 2011

For those who thirst for performance hatchbacks, Chrysler South Africa has launched the Mopar Edition – a special edition of the Dodge Caliber. Guy Franken, Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Chrysler South Africa, said that Chrysler saw the need in this specific market niche. He said that Chrysler believes that the racy Dodge Caliber Mopar Edition will be able to gratify the ‘boy racer' in its customers.

The Mopar trademark, which comes from combining “Motor” and “Parts,” is a formidable force in the performance parts field. The production of the Hemi engine was when excitement for it reached its peak but it actually has a long history.

Mopar has worked in the track and strip. Over the year, it has deepened its participation in numerous racing formulas related to Dodge in the US. It has gained a reputation of making high-performance and quality engineered parts.

The dodge Caliber Mopar Edition features the same Mopar DNA that had been installed in the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger muscle cars. The Dodge Caliber Mopar Edition has a price tag of R259 990.00. It will soon be offered in select Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealerships across South Africa.

While the five-door Dodge Caliber is clearly a C-segment hatchback, it continues to have the functionality, attitude, and strength expected from a SUV and blends this with a sporty profile that is similar to a coupe. One of the highlights of this hatchback is the interior that has been refined completely. This new interior comes with a well-balanced design aesthetic implemented using excellent craftsmanship with high quality materials, first unveiled to the public during the 2009 International Motor Show held in Frankfurt.

Still on the interior, the instrument panel comes with a new design and has a more integrated look. In addition to making the climate controls larger, there is now a storage bin in the center and cubby space. Helping add contrast to the interior design are the satin silver accents. Meanwhile, the use of the chrome accents aid in livening up a number of features like the cluster rings, the door handles, and shift bezel. These chrome accents also enhance the HVAC or the heating, ventilation and air conditioning vents. In order to heighten comfort for the passengers, the center console with its armrest split-lid and door-trim panels make use of soft-touch padded materials. The Dodge Caliber also has other exclusive features like having a rechargeable LED flashlight, an iPod Control, and even the Uconnect Navigation that allows for voice commands. For those who want to bring beverages on a trip, they can keep it inside the cooled-beverage storage bin called the Chill Zone. Musical entertainment is made possible with the MusicGate Power Sound Group which has two speakers that have been placed in the liftgate. It can even be swung down during tailgating, as well as other activities.

While the interior is impressive, another highlight is the Common-rail Diesel engine to satisfy the needs of discerning international customers. Under the hood of the Dodge Caliber are two engines, one a 2.0-liter version and the other the 2.4-liter unit. Both however are able to deliver elegance and power due to the use of an intake manifold design that has flow control valves and, more importantly, the Variable-valve Timing.

With these two, the engines not just deliver more power, but compared to engines that do not have them, they ensure that operations stay noiseless and slicker. It can even result in improved fuel economy. The World Engine 2.0-liter unit for example, when assessed against the 1.8-liter version it is replacing, offers power at 115 kW (156 hp DIN), which is 4% higher. Torque is better by 13% at 190 Nm (140 lb.-ft.). Meanwhile the four-cylinder 2.4-0liter unit can deliver output at 125 kW (170 hp DIN) with maximum torque at 220 Nm (162 lb.-ft.).

Meanwhile, there is also the Euro V capable engine, that when partnered with the manual six-speed transmission, offers output of 16% more when compared to the diesel engine, at 120 kW (163 hp DIN). Peak torque is better by 3% with 320 Nm (236 lb.-ft.). Even the towing capability is better at 1,500 kg., or 25% more. In order to improve the performance, increase the durability, and lower the weight, the company made sure to use the best like the fourth-generation direct-injection system, connecting rods in forged steel, and the head and pistons in aluminum.

By enhancing the dual balance shaft and the use of sound-dampening material, the Dodge Caliber is able to offer the best in passenger refinement. This is because by doing so, the harshness and vibration of the diesel engine are lowered by as much as 25% compared to the prior Dodge Caliber CRD. Indeed, by having a good mix of a new engine and upgraded interior, the Dodge Caliber is sure to meet the needs of any selective customers, be it here or abroad.

According to Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC, President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Accavitti, the Dodge Caliber is the usual C-class car. When the company first released this model a few years back, its daring style made a strong statement on the roads in Europe, he added. This ensured the owners were not only able to stand out but also become active and a lot more, he continued. President and CEO Accavitti further said that with a turbo-diesel engine inside, the new Dodge Caliber now has better performance and improved fuel consumption. By having an upgraded interior and a host of customer-friendly features, this model is able to convey to its European customers that distinct attitude expected from Dodge and mixed this with the one of the segment’s best value proposition, he shared.
