Lexus introduced today at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) the 2011 CT 200h F Sport model, an improved version of the latest hybrid car from the manufacturer which brings a set of visual and performance enhancements. Some of the design improvements include front and rear styling, alloy wheels and F Sport badging.
These are completed by the new suspension kit which lowers the car as well as by the unique Flame Blue exterior color. Inside, the car brings an unique interior trim, a new F Sport steering wheel, a new set of aluminum sport pedals, scuff plates, instrument panel and privacy glass.
Furthermore, Lexus says that the CT 200h F Sport models will feature its unique body performance damper, designed to improve ride and handling. This technology improves torsional rigidity, suppressing vibrations and contributes to ride comfort without the penalty of significant extra weight. The key elements are the lateral dampers, deployed in the front and at the rear.
Lexus has unveiled the specifications of its latest hybrid offering, the new CT 200h full hybrid hatchback. The vehicle features the Lexus Hybrid Drive system, which brings out the best of a series hybrid (energy savings) and a parallel one (performance). The system allows drivers to choose from three different power modes – gasoline, EV or a combination of both. It also allows the CT 200h to perform impressive yet seamless acceleration and quiet operation while still offering high fuel efficiency and low emissions.
The hybrid system features a 1.8-liter VVT-i gas engine, a powerful electric motor, a generator, a high performance Ni-MH battery and a power control unit. It also includes a power split device that uses a planetary gear set to combine and re-allocate power from the engine, electric motor and generator, as needed by the vehicle’s operations. Lexus designers housed the electric motor, generator and power split device in a lightweight yet compact transmission casing. Power is transmitted to the CT 200h’s front wheels via the shift-by-wire Electronically Controlled continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT).
Together, the gasoline engine and the electric motor generate a total system power output of 134 hp (100kW) to allow the vehicle to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 9.8 seconds and achieve a max track speed of 112 mph. Despite that performance, the CT 200h does not splurge on fuel and actually features a combined EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 42 mpg. The electric motor supports the gasoline engine for better acceleration and powers the vehicle with electricity when the EV mode is chosen.
Additionally, the electric motor serves as high-output generator to effect regenerative braking during deceleration and under braking. This optimizes energy management in the system by recovering kinetic energy – which is typically lost as heat during deceleration and under braking -- as electrical energy that can be stored. When in EV mode, the new CT 200h produces zero NOx and particulate emissions. It also could travel by up to a mile at speeds of up to 28 mph on that mode.
