In order to celebrate the first anniversary of its independence, Saab unveiled today the 2011 9-3 Convertible Independence Edition. As expected, the new car will be built in a limited edition of just 366 units, one of each day during the first year and one extra for the start of a second year.
The car was unveiled at firm’s assembly plant in Trollhättan, features a unique Amber Orange metallic paint finish and it is based on the top-of-the-line Griffin Aero specification.
Some of the features seen on these special edition are: five spoke 18-inch alloy wheels with a satin chrome/black finish, orange trimmed beige sports leather seats and glovebox, driver ‘welcome’ message in instrument display, unique turbo boost gauge, orange stitched sports leather steering wheel and carpet mats with grey piping.
Under the hood, the car comes with a choice of two engines: a 180 hp, 1.9-liter two-stage turbo diesel and a 220 hp 2.0-liter gasoline turbo with direct injection and variable valve timing.
According to the manufacturer, a Biopower version able to run on any combination of gasoline or E85 fuel is also available. All engine are mated to a six-speed automatic or manual transmission. P.S. Also check the all-new 2012 Saab 9-3 Griffin range!

Clean rear deck styling: Pop-up toll bars plus a retractable rear head are made more efficient by twin fairings and hint at the sporty character of the Convertible.
Bold frontal styling: It has a prominent central grill with a wing motif inspired by the Aero X concept car, like the U-shaped pressing in the clamshell hood of the classic Saab. The form of the headlamp units and grille is matched by a smooth bumper molding that has a deep trapezoidal air intake.
Coupé-like appearance: Six cross-braces plus strong tensioning give the soft-top a taut and smooth appearance.
Unique Surround: Trim It has a U-shaped styling that starts from the base of the A-pillars and extends to the top of the doors, rear side trims as well as tonneau cover. With keys covered in metallic colors, it unites the front and rear areas for passengers and brings together the top surfaces of the exterior that go in whenever the top is up.
Hydraulically-powered, 3-layer roof With automatic self-latching to the windshield header, it fully deploys in 20 seconds, making it one of the fastest in its class.
Rain gutter sewn into the soft-top fabric sides: This keeps water from dripping down onto the seats whenever the door is opened.
Lightweight design: It comes with aluminum parts: soft-top frame, front header rail and swiveling braces.
Unique tonneau cover operation: For faster roof deployment, the tonneau comes with a unique 2-stage cycle. It moves up horizontally then moves rearward, parallel to the trunk’s top, offering a more robust operation and efficient sealing.
