Bmw revealed today the 2012 1-Series Coupe and Convertible models, two updated versions of the well known vehicle which promises to offer more efficiency and premium quality. The new cars come with a new design for the front fascia consisting of BMW’s innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches in order to reduce the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle.
Furthermore, new design accents are now incorporated into the headlight and tail light clusters. Inside, the car features new switches and controls with a more refined look and feel. As expected, under the hood we find the popular 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that delivers 230 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque (128i).
The 2012 135i is powered by the new 3.0-liter inline-6 engine and it is equipped with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger as well as with the Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology.
This engine delivers 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, and it is capable to push the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds (Convertible model in 5.4 seconds), when using the standard 6-speed manual transmission. With the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT), the car is able to sprint to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds (Convertible in 5.3 seconds).
A 6-speed Steptronic automatic remains optional on the 128i. So equipped, the 128i Coupe runs 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds (Convertible in 7.0 seconds), or 6.1 seconds (Convertible in 6.4 seconds) with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. The 128i Coupe/Convertible will be offered as standard with the new Air Curtain, BMW’s latest aerodynamic innovation and introduced first on the 2012 Bmw 1-Series M Coupe.
The Air Curtain improves air flow around the front wheel arches with the benefit of significantly reduced turbulence. The 128i Coupe/Convertible can also be equipped with special Aero Wheels to further enhance the performance of the Air Curtain system.
Moreover, the 2012 1-Series Coupe/Convertible can be offered with the optional M Sport Package, which means that we will find a new aero kit, an increased top speed limiter, better brake cooling, and enhanced aesthetics. On the 135i Coupe/Convertible, the Sports Suspension also includes a high-performance brake system incorporating 6-piston fixed calipers on the front and 2-piston calipers at the rear.
BMW brings together the unique, dynamic and distinctive design elements for the 2012 BMW 1-Series Coupe models. The Coupe’s taut body with Hofmeister kink greenhouse design stands out with its long hood and nimble appearance. There are large frameless doors and short overhangs that match the new BMW’s strong shoulder lines.
Meanwhile, the 135i Coupe comes with the standard M Aerodynamic Kit to make it come out as more aggressive. The kit includes an additional lip spoiler that delivers maximum downforce when running on high speed. Other standard features included are Xenon adaptive headlamps with light emitting diodes, while the L shaped tail lamps give off an impression of a lowered look.
With the same light design as those of other BMWs, the new BMW 1-Series is just as strikingly beautiful in the evening. It has the usual crown rings on each headlight along with the standard cornering and daytime running light units. What’s more, its trunklid comes armed with spoiler that generates more attention at the rear. To deliver optimum safety, the Adaptive Brake Lights offer 2 levels of operation. Momentarily, the adaptive lighting system is currently available by option on 128i models.
