2012 Bmw 3-Series, Acura RDX earn IIHS Top Safety Pick award

Article by Christian A., on May 22, 2012

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just named its Top Safety Picks – the 2013 Acura RDX and 2012 BMW 3 Series sedan. The roof strength of the two vehicles was improved, proving to be a key to earn them the IIHS Top Safety Pick titles. The roof strength of the previous-generation Acura RDX had a “marginal” rating.

On the other hand, the previous BMW 3 Series got an “acceptable” rating. The IIHS said that the Top Safety Pick ranking of the 2012 BMW 3 Series applies just to the redesigned F30 sedan as the E92 2012 BMW 3 Series Coupe/Convertible hasn’t been refreshed yet.

It’s possible that when the 3 Series coupe/convertible is updated later in 2012, it will be known as the BMW 4 Series.

Majority of the models that compete with the 3 Series have already been named Top Safety Picks, such as the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The rivals of the 2013 Acura RDX that have also earned IIHS Top Safety include the BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, and Volvo XC60.

BMW’s 3-Series Sedan is the first in the compact sports sedan class and, over the years, it has come to symbolize BMW’s dynamics, aesthetic appeal, and sporting capability. With its elegant and dynamic lines, this 6th-model generation of the best-selling premium vehicle in the world highlights the BMW mid-size model’s sporting character.

And although it has grown in every dimension compared to its predecessor, the new 3-Series retains that perfect balance of elegance and athleticism. And just like in earlier generations, this sedan's dynamic proportions are being shaped by a sweeping bonnet, a short front overhang, a long wheelbase and a typically BMW set-back greenhouse.

The new 3-Series features a wedge-shaped silhouette, a wider track with additional 37 millimeters at the front and 47 millimeters at the rear, an accentuated width, and multiple surfaces on the front end, all emphasizing the car’s sporting look. Moreover, the 3-Series' stance is highlighted by the car's upright and slightly front-leaning BMW kidney grille with their wide and squat interpretation. The car also has LED accent lights that look like eyebrows above the twin headlights with corona rings that give the classic BMW focused appearance more intensity. The headlights extend up to the kidney grille's frame, with the two merging into a single stylish unit and adding more focus to the car's broad-set stance.

Additionally, the new 3-Series has replaced its predecessor's central air intake with two larger intakes fixed under the headlights to the front end's outer edges, thus giving the car more athleticism. There are also small vertical intakes on the far left and the far right of the main ducts, helping create an "Air Curtain." The Air Curtain is a new technology that's designed to improve air flow around the front wheels in order to enhance the aerodynamic efficiency as well as reduce fuel usage at higher speeds.

What makes up the most prominent feature of the 3-Series Sedan's front end design are the kidney grille's closely spaced squat openings as well as the heavily contoured bonnet finish with precise lines. These contribute to a front end that looks lower-slung and that give the BMW 3-Series a clear sporting edge.
