2012 Kia Picanto to receive four new fuel-efficient engines

Article by Christian A., on January 25, 2011

Kia Motors’ next-generation Picanto, which is the company’s latest A-segment hatchback, will go on sale in the United Kingdom in late spring 2010. The Picanto, which makes its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, has been re-engineered and redesigned with stand-out styling, delivering a sense of maturity and solidity.

The new Picanto, which is longer than the previous model and which comes with an extended wheelbase, guarantees more passenger comfort and 27% increased cargo space.

Offered for the first time with a choice of three-door and five-door body styles, the three-door vehicle will not arrive in the U.K. until the autumn. Kia is poised to redefine its position as one of the most competitive vehicles in the “city car” A-segment.

Picanto buyers will choose from up to four all-new super-efficient powertrains: three versions of the 1-liter, three-cylinder Kappa engine (petrol, flex fuel and bi-fuel) and a single 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol Kappa power unit.

Exhaust emissions have been greatly reduced, so that regular models in the new Picanto line-up will have a CO2 rating of 95 to 105 g/km. Power outputs will range from 69 to 85 ps, with maximum torque between 94 and 121 Nm.

Generating 82 ps and 94 Nm of torque is the bi-fuel 1-liter engine and fuel economy for all of the engines is also improved. In the U.K., some models will be available with Kia’s fuel-stretching ISG technologies, cutting emissions to between 90 and 100 g/km and further improving fuel economy. Depending on the model, the engines will be paired to a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions.

Aside from offering new levels of powertrain efficiency, the Picanto also boasts a distinctive exterior, sophisticated interior, and numerous “large car” advanced comfort and safety features like LED daytime running lights, grip-type outside door handles and six or seven airbags, button-start with smart key and six or seven airbags, depending on the model. The new Picanto’s greatly reduced CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy will definitely appeal to cost-conscious motorists.
