For those who don’t remember, Lexus introduced the LS 460 Sport package on the 2010 model year and this was a premiere for the LS because the car received a sporty look thanks to the new exterior styling. Today Lexus announced the new LS 460 Sport Special Edition, which will be available only for the 2012 LS 460 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model.
Priced at $77,000 (processing and handling fee of $875 is not included), the new 2012 Lexus LS 460 Special Edition will be manufactured in a limited edition of just 250 units and will feature an Obsidian exterior as well as plenty of features.
According to Lexus, the 2012 LS 460 Special Edition will include a two-tone black and topaz beige interior with contrast stitching on black leather trim, the Lexus HDD Navigation System, Sport and Comfort Packages, 19-inch 10-spoke forged alloy wheels wrapped with summer tires,
Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned air suspension with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), a sport exterior trim and grille, sport front seats with climate control, a leather-trimmed heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, headlamps washer, Intuitive Parking Assist, matte dark brown ash burl wood trim, one-touch open/close power trunk, power door closer, heated rear seats and rear power sunshade.
The Lexus LS 460 has a 4.6 L V8 engine that is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, helping it provide a smooth and powerful performance. The engine gives you 380 hp with 367 lb.-ft. of peak torque for the rear-wheel-drive models, and 357 horsepower with torques of 344 lb.-ft. for the all-wheel drive models.
Innovative technologies such as the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and electronically controlled intake cam also allow the V8 engine to give outstanding performance. The VVTi-E is an electrically controlled intake that gives you outstanding engine-startup operation and stellar high outputs.
There is also a dual fuel-injection system that uses both direct and port injection. This gives the car utmost efficiency regardless of the conditions. The direct injection cools the cylinders that are necessary for the high compression ratio of 11.8:1. That high compression ratio, in turn, is necessary for the engine to be at its best. Meanwhile the Acoustic Control Induction System and the dual-tract intake system help to make power delivery linear and smooth.
The eight-speed automatic transmission is responsible for the gear ratios that give you the best torque but still makes the car very quiet and fuel efficient even at higher speeds. The LS 460 can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 5.4 seconds for the rear wheel drive, and just .5 second longer for the AWD models.
The high performance of the Lexus LS 460 does not mean that it is bad for the pocket. In the city, the car is expected to go for 16 miles on every gallon and 24 miles on a gallon of glass when on the highways. For the all-wheel drive models, the figures are 16 mpg for city driving and 23 mpg for highway. It also complies with the Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II standards. A new ECO drive indicator helps encourage economical driving.
The drive train that you see on the AWD models are similar to the one you find on the Lexus LS 600h L. These AWD models have a compact center TORSEN limited-slip differential, which distributes torque between the rear and front wheels. In day to day driving, the torque distribution ratio between the front and rear wheels is 40:60 making the car more agile. Depending on the road conditions, the system is also able to change this torque distribution ratio anywhere from 30:70 to 50:50, giving you the best traction and stability no matter where you are driving.
