The Volvo V40 -- the all-new premium five-door, five-seat hatchback that made its debut last month at the Geneva Motor Show – has a starting price of only £19,745 on the road, according to Volvo Car UK. The all-new Volvo V40 comes with a class-leading series of innovative high-tech features. This is the first model from Volvo that would be developed fully under its human-centric, Designed Around You strategy.

This model is the first ever in the world to get a pedestrian airbag, a feature that lessens the severity of pedestrian injuries if there is an impact. The V40 is the only model in its class to offer City Safety as standard. It also offers Pedestrian Detection, which is effective at speeds of as fast as 22mph.

It offers strong Benefit In Kind (BIK) figures for company car users with the V40 D2 at £43 and £85 for 20% and 40% tax payers respectively.

V40 D2 provides the best BIK figures of all the premium 5-door hatchbacks, surpassing the BMW 116d ED (£45 and £90) and the Audi A3 1.6 TDI (£48 and £97).

The V40 will be offered in ES, SE and SE LUX trim with Bluetooth featured as standard throughout the range. Orders may now be placed for these hatchbacks, which start production in May. Deliveries will begin in September. The D2 version of the Volvo V40 boasts a combined fuel consumption of 78.5 mpg and has a CO2 emissions rating as low as 94 g/km.

The 1.6-litre diesel engine boasts an output of 115 hp and 285 Nm of torque. It also is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function.

Therefore, the V40 has better running costs and the lowest vehicle tax bands. The entry-level ES features an amazing lineup of standard equipment such as the City Safety technology; the world's first pedestrian airbag; Bluetooth with music streaming; high performance audio with 5" color display screen; Electronic Climate Control; a set of 16" Matres alloy wheels; Dynamic Stability and Traction Control; power windows; leather steering wheel and gear knob; and textile floor mats.

While the V40 does have the well-known V-shaped bonnet of Volvo, the one in this model comes with bolder edging. Just behind the vehicle’s headlamps extend the wide shoulders which are sharp edged as well and thus mirror the rising beltline. It then goes to the rear door through an integrated “hook.” This particular design may be familiar to many as it was seen initially on the P1800 coupe.

The silhouette of the rood meanwhile is shaped like wedge and helps with the lean-forward stance. Meanwhile, the tail lamps in the rear have the same curve as that of the shoulders and since it was placed in a higher position, it allows for visibility to be maximized. Another Volvo signature design in the V40 is the broad shoulder appearance. This design feature was first seen during the 1950s with the Amazon models.

It was later reintroduced by Britain-born Peter Horbury under the S80 and the V70. According to the brand, the exterior of the V40 was in fact designed by none other than Chris Benjamin.

He is the Design Director of the brand’s California studio located in Camarillo, which is in the northwest area of Los Angeles. Director Benjamin revealed that he wanted a car that had wide shoulders, a high tail, and a wedge shape. He added that he envisioned it to be a vehicle that combined a sports wagon with a coupe. The brand has had a good experience when it comes to estates and even for some of the classic coupes, he continued. In describing the new model, Benjamin said it is a 3D piece of art that one can drive in.

Indeed, the profile of the exterior is smooth and is highlighted by the high gloss grille, both wide and low. This also helps underscore the model’s road-hugging characteristics. With the daytime running lights, which use LED, placed on the front end’s lower corners, it gives it that “blade design” look. Even the turn indicators on the mirror utilize LED as well as the rear position lights. Making use of LEDs as well is the high position brake light in the rear and even the light for the number plate in the rear.
