Volkswagen is introducing a new production edition of Beetle that features sound system from vaunted guitar and amp maker Fender. This special model – the new VW Beetle Fender Edition – is an offshoot of a Beetle Fender concept car that the German carmaker unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Designed as a tribute to the iconic American company, the Beetle Fender features a powerful appearance complemented with a 400-watt sound system (400 watts). The concept was well-received at Frankfurt, leading the company to develop a production version that is now being unveiled to the global public at the 2012 AMI in Leipzig.
Derived from the higher 'Design' level specification, the new VW Beetle Fender Edition is available in two shades of black: 'Black Uni' or 'Deep Black Pearl Effect.' Designers decided to employ a black finish on the VW Beetle Fender Edition to best showcase the car’s numerous chrome details, like the two Fender signs on the left and right front wings, the VW badge and the 'Beetle' wording on the boot. Also finished in chrome are the special edition’s standard 18-inch 'Disc' alloy wheels, the strip below the side windows, the side sill inserts and the wing mirrors. The new VW also features bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights as standard.
Inside, the VW Beetle Fender Edition features a black-trimmed cabin that visually links its occupant to the world of rock music. Its instrument dash features a chrome-plated Fender logo and is finished in 'Sunburst' style, a two-tone wood design of several guitars made by Fender. Interestingly, each VW Beetle Fender Edition is shipped with three exclusive Fender guitar picks.
Each VW Beetle Fender Edition is provided with redesigned sports seats which have central sections that are specified in fabric while the sides and headrests come in a black leather appearance. Its steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever are wrapped in leather with contrast stitching. The new VW Beetle Fender Edition also features air conditioning, color-trimmed floor mats and cruise control.
As mentioned, this special edition comes with a Fender sound system -- complete with USB interface (media in) – as controlled through the panel for the RCD 510 audio system. The RCD 510 audio system, meanwhile, includes a touchscreen, double tuner, SD card slot and integrated CD changer for six CDs.
Featured along with new Fender sound system is an adjustable interior ambient lighting in white, red and blue colors. This ambient lighting includes an illuminated ring around each of the door speakers as well as indirect lighting strips below the front side windows.
Fender sound system also includes two high-end tweeters in each mirror triangle and rear side panel, as well as woofers with double voice coils on the front doors. The rear side panels also feature woofers with a single voice coil. Fitted on the car’s boot is an enclosed bass box with a subwoofer with double voice coil. Completing the Fender sound system is a 10-channel 400-watt amplifier with class A/B power amps.
The German carmaker plans to introduce the new VW Beetle Fender Edition in autumn 2012. In Europe, Asia and Australia, the new VW Beetle Fender Edition could be powered by any of the four available direct-injection turbocharged engines – two TSI petrol engines with outputs of 77 kW (105 PS) and 118 kW (160 PS), and two TDI diesel engines with outputs of 77 kW (105 PS) and 103 kW (140 PS).
In the United States and South America, the new Beetle Fender could be powered by any of the three powerplants -- two petrol engines with outputs of 125 kW (170 PS) and 147 kW (200 PS) and one turbo diesel with output of 103 kW (140 PS). A Black Uni Beetle Fender – with a 105-PS TSI engine – has a starting price of €21,725 in Germany.
