2014 Audi A8 shows its Matrix LED headlight

Article by Christian A., on August 15, 2013

The new Audi A8 will be officially unveiled in September, at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), but the German manufacturer wanted to increase the interest in its upgraded flagship sedan. As a result, it released a photo showing the new headlight found on the A8.

As you can see, the design is quite impressive and the new Audi A8 features an interesting turn signal light that consists of lighting elements that illuminate in a defined sequence. According to Audi, this makes it easier for others to perceive the driver’s turning intentions, even under difficult conditions. Each headlight contains contains18 light-emitting diodes arranged in a strip that is subdivided into seven blocks.

Each taillight features 24 LEDs in eight segments, which are used to dynamically indicate the turning direction. During flashing, the blocks are sequentially activated at 20 millisecond intervals, from the inside outwards in the desired turning direction. After 150 milliseconds, all segments are bright; for another 250 milliseconds they illuminate with full intensity.

Afterwards, the turn signals go dark before repeating the lighting sequence. Moreover, the new Audi Matrix LED headlights feature navigation-based cornering lights and, in cooperation with the night vision assistant, a marker light that warns the driver of pedestrians in the dark and which also alerts the pedestrians.

Inside, the new Audi A8 is full of luxury and elegance, as expressed in its lines. Every passenger is treated to generous space, with the front seats available with ventilation and massage functions with five programs and intensities. The front cabin features an arching wrap-around as complemented by a lean and low instrument panel.

On the rear, the new Audi A8 and A8 L could be optionally specified with electrically adjustable, individual rear seats. Interestingly, Audi’s new flagship features a relaxation seat with electrically adjustable footrest, with A8 L available with a continuous, leather-covered center console.

Customers for the A8 are also provided with a number of optional features like the panorama glass roof, the four-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning and privacy windows. Also available is a convenience key feature with power door closing assist and an ionizer as well as a cooler and folding tables.

In terms of quality, the new Audi A8 is a car that never compromises. Audi has carefully picked and crafted all materials found in the new A8. The high quality nature of the new Audi A8 is seen on its finely executed details, the barely visible gaps in the two-piece inlays, its adjustable LED ambient light as well as on its premium leather seats. Leather options include the new Unicum leather -- natural-looking and soft -- in nutmeg brown.
