Were you hoping to snag the most expensive model in the 2014 Ford Mustang lineup? Saving just $54,650 for the 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 won’t be enough as it’s the purpose-built 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet built by Ford Racing that boasts the highest price of at least $97,990. Of course this Mustang isn’t allowed on the roads. It can’t be registered for street use.
However, it’s one outstanding drag race machine that complies with NHRA’s Stock and Super Stock classes. To reduce weight and optimize weight distribution, the body shell of the Mustang has been removed of all unnecessary equipment. It features a roll cage, Recaro buckets, and one-of-a-kind suspension hardware.
Last year, fans went crazy over a Cobra Jet concept that featured a twin-turbocharged version of the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8. But for the production 2014 Mustang Cobra jet models, a 5.0-liter V-8 with a Whipple 2.9-liter supercharger bolted on top will still be used. There’s not much that’s new for the 2014 model. Previous Mustang Cobra Jets were available in naturally aspirated forms but the 2014 model is available just as a supercharger.
In addition, 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet cars will receive an all-new 3-speed transmission, a parachute mount for when it goes past 150 mph. It will also be offered with two new colors, which include flat black and the bold Gotta Have-It Green hue. The 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet has a starting price of $97,990, not inclusive of paint and graphic items.
Only 50 examples will be produced for the 2014 model year. If you’re interested, don’t take too long to decide as it’s on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you can’t get on the first 50 list, you’ll be on a waiting list for Cobra jet production runs that could come later. Buyers can indicate the options that they want on their vehicle with Ford Racing this April. Production is expected to run between July and October 2013.
