The all-new 2014 Mazda 6 sedan will provide an optional diesel engine when it starts selling later this year. Mazda displayed its frugal new diesel engine in the international versions of the new 6 sedan but until today, it’s not sure if the engine will be available in the U.S. Earlier this year, Mazda made a pledge that it will later install the SkyActiv-D 2.2 diesel in an American vehicle but no specific car was named.
Automakers don’t frequently offer diesel engines to the market for different reasons, one of which is the Americans’ usual dislike for compression-ignition engines. However, Mazda executives made a public commitment to sell more diesel engines (as well as more upscale models) in the U.S.
By doing this, Mazda would further boost its fuel-economy qualifications. Mazda hasn’t yet confirmed how much the 2.2-liter turbodiesel inline-four in the U.S. produces, the European 6 can deliver 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque from this engine. Mazda offers it with a choice between manual and automatic transmissions with six forward speeds. Its fuel economy can easily meet or exceed the 40 mpg mark on the highway.
The diesel model can accelerate from zero to 62mph in as short as 7.8 seconds. A 2.5-liter gasoline inline-four, which delivers 184 hp and 185 lb-ft, is the standard engine in the Mazda 6. The official fuel-economy estimates haven’t been released yet but it’s believed that the engine will be able to return “class leading” highway figures, at 37 mpg or better.
Mazda 6 model is the mass production car that resulted from Mazda’s Takeri concept car, which was first introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2011.
According to Mazda Chief Designer Akira Tamatani, the new Mazda 6 boasts a robust framework as well as a low and wide stance, which conveys stability and strength and creates the impression of outstanding vitality without departing from the beautiful form and universal aesthetic appeal that it showcases as a CD car. Tamatani said that they have come up with a design wherein the dynamic and wild expressions of motion realize a powerful presence artistically. Simply looking at the Mazda 6 heightens expectations about one’s driving experience even before the very act of driving and riding in it.
With a single glance, the car’s exterior design expresses animalistic dignity and tenacity, as well as a sporty flare, through a powerful and smooth physique. Its coordinated interior, which comes in keynote black, is contemporary and chic without compromising on quality and a timeless sense of luxury.
At the car’s front, the 'signature wing' is incorporated into its deeply sculpted face. This wing is a unifying element of Mazda’s new family face design. The creases of the hood extend and flow from the signature wing’s tips toward the body character lines. These hood creases, together with the nose’s solid design, complement the body’s overall dynamic form body which expresses strong desire for motion.
As for the side view, three character lines dominate. One is an elegant line extending forward from the tire at the rear, another is a rear fender line that suggests a driving force from the hind quarter, and the third is a front fender line suggesting strong shoulders that support nimble forefeet. These lines combine to mimic the form of a crouched predator ready to pounce on its prey and explode in movement.
