By being a sports utility vehicle (SUV), the new Mercedes-Benz GLA is able to have the design values of Progression and mix it with the values of Tradition. One excellent description is that it is the SUV of the future. That this new model is an all-rounder comes as no surprise given that this is a trademark of the brand’s SUVs. The new GLA however at the same time brings a sculptural look, youthful feel, and subtle drama.
When it comes to representing modern luxury, sensual clarity was a factor that the designers focused on, which is also the brand’s design philosophy. The goal was to have smooth surfaces and clear curves that would convey high technology while displaying at a meta-level that emotional appeal. This sensual clarity is present in the core design values not just on the Progression and Tradition but even on the Emotion.
These clearly serve as the guiding star and are highlighted in a different manner based on the model. Through this latest offering, Mercedes-Benz was able to connect progression and tradition, as well as avant-garde and modernity. Dependent on what quality the design is focused on, each of the model series will be assigned a role and will come with a very specific personality.
Vice President Design at Daimler AG Gorden Wagener reveals that the striking features seen on the GLA are the best examples that the brand is committed to progressive thinking. Its off-road proportions meanwhile, he adds, are able to attract customers easily. He goes on to say that having clearly defined surfaces allows the new GLA to show serenity and power.
Wagener says under this model, the brand managed to get the necessary clarity and combine it with as much emotional appeal as possible. Even with all of these, the models remain to be identifiable as those made by Mercedes-Benz. The reason is that even with the new stylistic developments, the designers made sure that the tradition would still be there. As such, the designers chose from a selection of styling features expected from Mercedes-Benz.
