Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the 2014 S63 AMG, its high-performance saloon that promises to set new standard in terms of dynamics, lightweight construction and efficiency. As expected, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is powered by the 5.5-liter V8 engine developing an impressive 585 hp (430 kW) and 900 Nm of torque.
With these numbers, the car hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h or 155 mph. The 2014 S63 AMG is available in three versions: Short wheelbase, Long wheelbase (only available as right-hand drive) and 4Matic Long wheelbase. If the S63 AMG Long wheelbase hits 100 km/h (in 62 mph) 4.4 seconds, the S63 AMG 4Matic Long wheelbase is even quicker and zooms to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.0 seconds, all the way to a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
All the S63 AMG models use the same AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission which offers three driving modes – C (Controlled Efficiency), S (Sport) and M (Manual). In the “C” mode the ECO start/stop is active and as expected it shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In the “S” and “M” transmission modes the ECO start/stop function is deactivated.
Regarding the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, this system is able to distribute the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The 4Matic system has a total weight of just 70 kilograms. All variants of the S 63 AMG are fitted with ESP Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed.
Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic comes equipped with the AMG Ride Control sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. Meanwhile, the S63 AMG with rear-wheel drive features AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL.
For the first time, the S63 AMG is available exclusively with 19-inch AMG forged light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish. As an option, 20-inch wheels are available. Behind these wheels we find the AMG high-performance composite brake system, but as an option the vehicle can be fitted with the ceramic high-performance composite brake system.
Regarding the design, the S63 AMG continues the same design line seen on other AMG models as it features new radiator grille, front bumper with the grille painted in high-gloss black, three-dimensional front splitter in silver chrome, side sill panels, V8 Biturbo lettering on the front wings, a black rear air diffuser with trim in silver chrome and two chromed twin tailpipes.
The interior was also upgraded and it features newly developed AMG sports seats, high-quality analogue clock in IWC design, an AMG sports steering wheel and a high-resolution TFT colour display. Pricing starts at €149,880.50 for the S63 AMG (Short wheelbase) and at €152,617.50 for the S63 AMG 4Matic (Long wheelbase). [source: Mercedes-Benz]
