Bentley Continental GT3-R is ready to make its North American debut at 2014 Pebble Beach as the most dynamic and fastest-accelerating product built by the company. For those who don’t know, the new Continental GT3-R is inspired by the Continental GT3 race car and carries a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo V8 that develops 572 bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
Thanks to a weight drop of 220 lb and shorter gearing, the Bentley Continental GT3-R is able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standstill in 3.6 seconds. Regarding the design, the Continental GT3-R features a Glacier White finish, as well as two-tone green graphics that trace the prominent power lines on the side profile.
There is also a new front splitter as well as a new fixed rear wing, both finished in carbon fiber. Other exterior highlights include gloss black headlamp bezels, matrix grille, window surrounds and bumper strips, but also a new set of 21-inch lightweight wheels finished in gloss black.
A new carbon fiber cover is found on the 4.0-liter V8 engine. Inside we only find two seats wrapped in Beluga black leather with diamond-quilted Alcantara. The new Continental GT3-R will only be produced in a limited edition of just 300 units and the United States market will receive 100 of them, while Canada will only receive 4 units.
If you are interested in buying one you’d better know that the Continental GT3-R is priced at $337,000 and dealers are already accepting orders. Deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2015.
Christophe Georges, President and CEO, Bentley Motors, Inc. comments: “Pebble Beach is the perfect location for the debut of the rarest and most dynamic Continental GT, the GT3-R. It is a testament to the Bentley trademarks of luxury and performance and we’re excited to share it with the friends of Bentley during this gathering of fine automobiles.”
In order to allow the Continental GT3-R to have that dynamic capability that is unparalleled in the Grand Touring segment, it was fitted with a chassis system that is geared for performance. However it was also important that it would continue to have a level of refinement fit for daily use. The dampers and air springs fitted to it are the same sports-tuned setup developed for the Continental V8 S, long established to be Bentley’s best-handling model.
Meanwhile, having the forged lightweight 21-inch wheels with the high-grip Pirelli tires helps channel the engine’s torque-vectored power output. With this particular combination, and adding in the sport-focused Electronic Stability Control program, the new Continental GT3-R is able to bring with it a new level of turn-in agility and handling dynamics. Further, the powertrain and chassis are able to instantly respond to the throttle inputs.
On the other hand, deceleration is made possible through the brand’s very own record-holding Carbon Silicon Carbide (CSiC) braking system. While the rear axle has 356 mm discs fitted to it, the front axle has the 420 mm discs on it and slowed by the 8-piston calipers having that attractive green paint finish. The brakes can absorb energy of as large as 10 megajoules in a single stop while continuing to be fade resistant.
This amount of energy is enough to power one family home for a total of six hours. Without a doubt, the CSiC brakes of the brand are truly a masterpiece of engineering in their own right. Talking about the performance of this new Continental GT3-R, Rolf Frech, who is the brand’s Member of the Board for Engineering, shares that the brand wanted this GT3-R project to have its very own powertrain and chassis systems.
