Volvo unveiled the all-new XC90 back in August but the manufacturer also introduced the XC90 First Edition, which was reportedly sold out in just 47 hours. Now, the Swedish manufacturer unveiled another variant of the XC90: the 2015 Volvo XC90 R-Design. That’s right folks, the XC90 just got sportier and looks absolutely stunning!
As a result, the vehicle arrives with a redesigned front bumper, a new front grille, new fog lights, a silk metal window surround, integrated roof rails and silver matt mirror covers. At the rear, there is a redesigned bumper with integrated air diffuser and larger dual exhausts.
The design is completed by the 20-inch R-Design alloy wheels, but smaller wheels are available too. Inside, the XC90 R-Design gets gearshift paddles, Contour sports seats, a steering wheel wrapped in leather just like the gearshift knob, new pedals, floor mats and illuminated tread plates.
An R-Design leather key remote control also comes as standard. In addition, the interior gets a 12.3-inch display that features a unique R-Design theme.
The 2015 XC90 R-Design can be ordered with the T6 turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine that produces 320 hp (239 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. A T5 petrol engine is also available with 254 hp (189 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.
For diesel fans, we have a twin-turbodiesel D5 engine that generates 225 hp (168 kW) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft) of torque. A less powerful D4 disel engine arrives with 190 hp (142 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.
The all-new Volvo XC90 offers innovative digital craftsmanship and groundbreaking interaction design, as based from the carmaker’s extensive discussions with its customers. The portrait screen is laid out like a stack of flexible 'tiles,' each referring to certain functionality.
Details like information, navigation and media are located on the upper section of the screen, while phone controls, climate controls and application icons are placed on the bottom area. Once a tile expands on interaction, the other tiles are compressed but remain visible and accessible. With this configuration, the touch screen becomes user-friendly, without having to the main menu when switching between functions.
Volvo is making available for the all-new XC90 a four-zone climate system featuring individual settings for the occupants on the front row and in the second row. Depending on the market, the third row benefits from a separate air-conditioning, either as standard or optional. Likewise, the new XC90 is equipped with Volvo’s CleanZone air purification system that now features a new carbon filter that allows it to better capture small, harmful particles and pollen in the incoming air.
The all-new Volvo XC90 is equipped with one of the top sound systems in the automotive world -- a 1,400 W Class D amplifier and 19 Bowers & Wilkins speakers that features one of the first air-ventilated subwoofers in a vehicle. These subwoofers have been integrated into the body of the XC90, turning the entire interior space into a giant subwoofer.
