Ladies and gentlemen, this is the 2016 Ford Focus RS, the newest hot hatch from the American manufacturer which promises to bring some headaches to the competition. The new Focus RS is powered by the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine found on the 2015 Mustang, which delivers more than 315 hp.
Ford didn’t offer any details regarding the maximum torque delivered by the engine, but taking in consideration that the six-speed manual gearbox was updated in order to be able to handle the additional torque, we expect to see more than the Mustang’s 422 Nm (320 lb-ft). What’s more interesting is that the power is delivered to an all-wheel drive system with Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control.
According to the press release, the Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive system is based on twin electronically controlled clutch packs on each side of the rear drive unit.
These packs are able to manage the vehicle’s front and rear torque split, and can also control the side-to-side torque distribution on the rear axle. Moreover, a maximum of 70 percent of the drive torque can be diverted to the rear axle and up to 100 percent of this torque can be sent to each rear wheel.
Ford also worked with Michelin in order to develop a choice of high-performance 235/35 R19 tires: a standard Pilot Super Sport tire which for every-day use, while an optional Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire can be used on the track. When it comes to design, the 2016 Ford Focus RS shows a powerful and muscular character.
The front end is dominated by the trapezoidal grille located above the splitter as well as lower wings and large outboard openings on each side of the vehicle. At the rear, there is a large air diffuser with integrated twin-round high-performance exhaust outlets as well as a large roof spoiler, which features a subtle embossed RS logo.
The exterior design is completed by the multi-spoke 19-inch RS alloy wheels, which shoe a lightweight forged design finished in low-gloss black.
Inside, we find a new flat-bottomed steering wheel wrapped in leather, unique instrument graphics within the main cluster, new gauges located about the center console which displays the turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure, as well as a high-definition 8-inch colour touchscreen.
Moreover, we find new Recaro seats, as well as a Sony premium sound system with 10-speakers and a subwoofer. Ford will offer the 2016 Focus RS with a choice of four exterior colors: Nitrous Blue, Stealth Gray, Absolute Black and Frozen White.
The vehicle you see on the photos features the same Liquid Blue color seen on the Ford GT revealed last month at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. [source: Ford]
