Back in March, at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Maserati introduced the Alfieri Concept, a vehicle that celebrated company’s 100th anniversary and said much about the design DNA of future Maseratis. Due to the positive feedback, the Italian manufacturer owned by Fiat decided to build the Alfieri Concept and officially announced in its 5-year business plan the production version will arrive in 2016.
During an interview with the global design for parent company, Fiat, Lorenzo Ramaciotti told PistonHeads that the final version of the vehicle will look just like the concept car. “It will be impossible to see the difference”, Ramaciotti said.
We already know that the Maserati Alfieri will be offered exclusively with a V6 engine. The entry-level version will deliver 350 hp, but don’t worry, because Maserati will also offer a version delivering 450 hp, while the most powerful version will offer 520 hp.
A year later, Maserati will roll out the Alfieri Cabrio. Power will be delivered to the rear wheels on the lowered power version, while the 450 hp and 520 hp version will offer four-wheel drive options.
Ramaciotti also said that the Alfieri is not a replacement for the GranTurismo as the latter is a GT, while the Alfieri is a sports car.
Alfieri is a 2+2, just like the GranTurismo, but it will not offer the same interior space seen on the 911 or Audi TT. As a result, it will be priced below the GranTurismo, somewhere at $110,000 or 81,000 euros.
The Alfieri’s unveiling was perfectly timed to reinvent Maserati's design and production direction. If the all-new Quattroporte and Ghibli created the notion that Maserati was turning to premium, sporty four-door saloons, the Alfieri concept reminds everyone that the company has an amazing race heritage and an exceptional tradition in glamorous GT automobiles.
No one can doubt that the Alfieri’s concept car stands for true Maserati essence. It is a smooth, Italian styled 2+2 similar to the 1957 3500 GT, the 1959 5000 GT, and the 1969 Indy that came before, and plainly confirms Maserati's racing heritage. With a sportier personality than the GranTurismo, the Alfieri vaunts proportions that could be representative of future Gran Sports and are definitely an indicator of the company's style goals for the coming years. Maserati does not change. A Maserati is forever a Maserati.
As with every concept car, there is a solid aspiration to make the Alfieri a reality. It was imagined, engineered, and constructed in a method meant for true realism.
Alfieri is an evolutionary step in a glorious century of history and the time ahead that is revealing itself to the brand. Although they cannot confirm that this car will go into production in the next few years, but they are sure they will produce a very similar vehicle.
The process of development started off last summer. The design team was tasked to begin from a blank page to create a concept car for Maserati's centennial. Among the various ideas, the drawings that would bring about the current Alfieri came forth.
