MINI USA disclosed that it has come up with what may be the most versatile and spacious MINI. This is the 2016 MINI Clubman which is also the brand’s first model to join the compact premium segment. The Cooper model in particular will be released with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $24,100.
This new model has all the craftsmanship and premium quality expected from the brand while being wider and longer than previous models, all under $25,000. MINI USA will also be offering a Cooper S variant and is priced at $27,650.
It is worth noting that the price does not include the Destination & Handling fee of $850. Patrick McKenna shares that the company expects moving forward the MINI Clubman will set new standards in the premium compact class as it relates to premium value and quality.
The MINI had already defined what should be expected for premium small cars when the Hardtop was re-launched in 2002 and hopefully it should be the same with the Clubman by redefining what premium means when it comes to customization, McKenna adds.
McKenna is the Department Head for Product Planning & Events at MINI USA. Similar to every product in MINI USA’s lineup, all the features can be availed a la carte or with bundled packages.
This gives customers the freedom to choose what they want rather than being forced into buying very expensive packages with features that may or may not be used. In addition, there are special upholsteries that have been specially developed for the MINI Clubman.
Take for example the blue-dyed Indigo leather that has been smooth-grained having a diamond-stitching in the same pattern as those found in the classic English Chesterfield sofas. There is also the rich Burgundy leather with a Dinamica trim that is also environment-friendly.
Though it is indeed wider and longer than prior MINI models, the MINI Clubman has also performed well in extensive tests done. These different tests were made on various locations Circuit of Miramas in France, Millbrook Proving Ground in the UK, Nürburgring in Germany, and even the legendary roads found in Wales.
The reason for the tests was to make sure that the MINI Clubman continued to have the trademark legendary “fun to drive” handling that customers and enthusiasts expect from the brand when on the road. The MINI Clubman is powered by the three-cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology engine or the four-cylinder version that was developed by the BMW Group.
As with all models from the MINI, it will also have the efficient and standard six-speed manual transmission. The Cooper S version though will also offer either the 8-speed automatic transmission or the 8-speed sport automatic transmission that has paddle shifters.
This sporty transmission is a first as it displays the efficiency and high-technology expected from the brand. Furthermore, it is rare to have these features in the compact premium segment.
