Maybe you are wondering whether a sedan could be as fast as coupe. Yes, it could be. A driver may not need to pilot a coupe or a sports car just to experience the thrill of speed. In fact, some four-door sedans do achieve top speeds that go beyond a driver’s imagination.
Alpina is getting ready to introduce its new Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo four-door production sedan in the United Kingdom. Derived from the BMW 7 Series, the Alpina B7 is powered by a huge twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine with twin-turbo charging, gasoline direct injection and Valvetronic technologies. Its specially developed twin-scroll turbochargers are able to provide up to 1.2 bar of boost pressure with minimal inertia.
When it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, Alpina announced that the B7 could deliver 600 hp (608 PS) of max output between 5,750 rpm and 6,250 rpm, as well as 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque available from 3,000 rpm. Even at just 2,000 rpm, this V8 twin-turbo engine already delivers 494 lb.-ft. of torque. As a result, the Alpina B7 could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 193 mph (310 km/h).
But it seems that Alpina made some tweaks and re-calculations and as a result, the carmaker decided to revise the top speed of the new B7. While the max power output and torque practically remain the same, the top speed of the Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo has surged from 193 mph (310 km/h) to 205 mph (330 km/h).
The new Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo features a new indirect intercooler system (air/water/air) with the main intercooler feeding two large and close-coupled intercoolers. The system also features extra radiators to ensure thermodynamic stability of the twin-turbo V8 at all times. Alpina also upgraded the ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox with additional cooling, stronger gear clusters and a larger torque converter.
At a top speed of 193 mph, the Alpina B7 is easily one of the fastest four-door sedans in the world. But with the revised top speed figure of 205 mph, the Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo super-sedan could lay claim to the title of being the fastest four-door in the world. The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and the Aston Martin Rapide S have top speeds of 204 mph and 203 mph, respectively.
Alpina GB brand manager Gary Lott remarked that as road conditions allow, the B7 Bi-Turbo could attain its top speed in long-distance trip. He added that this top speed was achieved while still allowing superb ride quality and refinement at lower speeds. The new Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo has a price of £115,000.
