IIHS gives Top Safety Pick+ award to sixth-generation 2017 BMW 5 Series (G30)

Article by Christian A., on May 18, 2017

After earning the maximum safety rating of five stars from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), the 2017 BMW 5 Series (G30) was named by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) a “Top Safety Pick +.”

Being granted with the Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS isn’t an easy feat. Currently, IIHS grants two awards safety awards for 2017: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. To become 2017 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle should earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints). Likewise, a vehicle should earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. Qualifying for 2017 Top Safety Pick+ means a vehicle managed to earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. Furthermore, it should earn an acceptable or good headlight rating.

Following the necessary tests, IIHS adjudged that the 2017 BMW 5 Series is qualified to be granted the Top Safety Pick+ award. This comes after the 2017 BMW 5 Series earned “Good” ratings for the five crashworthiness tests -- small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. It also earned a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention as well as “Good” rating for its headlights.

BMW noted that the IIHS praised the latest generation of the BMW 5 Series for its body and structure design. Results from small overlap front crash test indicate a well-maintained driver space. During the test, only 5 inches of maximum intrusion at the footrest was recorded, which means that there is a low risk of significant injuries in a real-world crash with similar impact. The new BMW 5 Series earned a “Superior” rating for the front crash prevention mainly thanks to optional safety features like the available Frontal Collision Warning with either City Collision Mitigation or with Extended Collision Mitigation.

Roomier, more efficient and more technologically advanced than the previous generation, the new 5 Series is also lighter by as much as 137 lbs. Its state-of-the-art chassis systems integrate an array of technologies like Dynamic Damper Control with Adaptive Mode and Integral Active Steering as well as BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system. Also included are features like Advanced Driver Assistant Systems and Parking Assistance Systems. Standard safety features include Dynamic Stability Control and Brake Dry Assist as well as Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control.

The latest BMW 5 Series earned a 5-star rating safety from Euro NCAP after an overall score of 81 percent. It scored a 91 percent rating in adult occupant safety; 85 percent in the child occupant safety category and 81 percent in the pedestrian safety evaluation.
