Ford finally introduces the five-door Fiesta ST in Europe

Article by Christian A., on October 10, 2016

Back in 2013, Ford released its latest Fiesta ST model. Exclusive only in North America, the Fiesta ST was sold as a five-door hatch. Those in Europe complained that they only had the three-door model. This year however, Ford’s Europe division aims to make it up to its customers by bringing in the five-door supermini into the continent. Hopefully, this move will help boost sales before an all-new Fiesta is launched and introduced to the public in 2017 and an all-new ST version arrives in early 2018.

Nothing much has changed with the European Fiesta ST. Aside from a change from a three-door to a more practical five-door version, the European Fiesta ST is still powered by the same turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine which punches out 182 horsepower (134 kilowatts) and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. The five-door model however is heavier compared to its previous version but is capable of a 0 to 62 mph sprint of 6.9 seconds. There has been no official announcement about its top speed but it is estimated to be about the same as the three-door’s 139 mph.

Five-door Fiesta ST returns 46.3 mpg UK in the combined cycle and emits around 141 g/km of carbon dioxide. Compared to the three-door model, there’s a decrease of 1.5 mpg UK and an increase of 3 g/km emission.

The newest European Fiesta range will be sold by Ford U.K. next month with a price tag of £19,495 on the ST-2 trim. Compared to its three-door model, the new five-door Fiesta ST is cheaper by £600 which makes it a good value for money considering the latter’s more practical features. Ford is expecting that the five-door model will boost the European Fiesta ST sales by a quarter in the future. Others have questioned why it took this long for Ford to realize that a five-door variant is practically more saleable than the three-door model they first introduced to the people of Europe. Well, ladies and gentlemen, this may be a case of trial and error just to be fair to Ford.

Ford also introduced a performance variant called the Fiesta ST200. It comes with 200 horsepower and is capable of accelerating from a standstill in just 6.7 seconds. It is also estimated to have a top speed of 143 mph. It may not seem much for a “performance” model; still, it’s quite a feat for Ford. Sad thing is that this range-topping Fiesta will come with only three doors and is even more expensive than the five-door standard variant at £22,745.

If you’re out to try on different kinds of Ford models or if you have the luxury to spend some cash to try out these new variants, then go for it. But for now, it seems like the wiser option is to wait for the next generation Fiesta. And we hope this time Ford doesn’t let its European customers down. Crossing our fingers for even better models!

Press Release

The Ford Fiesta ST compact performance hatchback is for the first time available to order in Europe in five-door bodystyle alongside the three-door model.

The Fiesta ST five door offers additional practicality with easier access to the rear seats for passengers and for parents with small children, while retaining the performance and class-leading driving dynamics that earned the Fiesta ST more than 20 awards from around the globe during its first year on sale.

The model’s 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine delivers 182PS and 240Nm of torque, enabling 0-62mph acceleration in 6.9 seconds alongside 46.3mpg fuel efficiency and 141g/km CO2 emissions.* A Ford Performance-tuned chassis features optimised suspension, steering and brakes, supported by enhanced Torque Vectoring Control – which applies brake force to the inside front wheel when cornering to improve road holding and reduce understeer without affecting speed – and three-mode Electronic Stability Control.

“Ford has now sold more than 38,000 Fiesta STs in Europe since we introduced the acclaimed hot hatchback in 2013, and growing numbers of customers have been asking us for a five-door version,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “The Fiesta ST with five doors makes an affordable Ford Performance driving experience accessible to an even greater number of customers.”

Priced from £19,495 in the UK on ST-2 and ST-3 series from October, Ford predicts the Fiesta ST five door will account for 25 per cent of Fiesta ST sales in Europe. Exclusive Fiesta ST styling includes 17-inch alloy wheels, unique grille, dynamic headlight design, and dramatic rear diffuser element for the exterior. Five available colour options include Race Red and Spirit Blue. Recaro seats and unique ST detailing feature for the interior.

Ford earlier this year also revealed the new 200 PS Fiesta ST200 – available in three-door bodystyle only – with 6.7 second 100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration.
