Mercedes-Benz continues to redefine premium SUV with new GLS

Mercedes-Benz is offering its premium customers one of the most luxurious SUVs on the market -- the facelifted and upgraded version of the new Mercedes-Benz GLS seven-seater.

It’s well known that the new Mercedes-Benz GLS offers a great blend of luxurious comfort, roominess, agility, dynamics and safety.

Likewise, the new Mercedes GLS is now more fuel efficient and features highly advanced assistance systems as well as the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz telematics that includes remote-start capability and Internet access.

It also comes with the nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, additional DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, and enhanced air suspension system (AIRMATIC) with enhanced damping system (ADS).

Fitted as standard on the GLS as active driver assistance systems are the following: Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Crosswind Assist, PRE-SAFE system, Attention Assist, electronic all- wheel drive traction system 4ETS, Brake Assist BAS, cruise control and ESP.

Those who think that these systems might not be enough could avail of the optional Driver Assistance Package, which includes DIS.TRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, BAS PLUS with Cross- Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE Brake with pedestrian detection, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Speed Limit Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist.

Of course, Mercedes made sure that the GLS is also laden with passive occupant protection systems as supported by "electronic crumple zones" of the assistance systems and intelligent body design.

Available passive safety systems include two-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver and front passenger and window airbags above all three seat rows.

Customers who frequently travel during the night may want to improve their ability to drive in the dark with the optional LED Intelligent Light System. Additionally, Magic Vision Control could help mitigate impaired visibility brought by adverse weather conditions while the heated adaptive windscreen wiper system provides optimum water distribution.

Exterior Design

The new MY2017 Mercedes GLS impresses both inside and outside, as the SUV gets to speak the carmaker’s new design language. Outside, the Mercedes GLS boasts of redesigned front and a modernized rear.

In particular, Mercedes modernized the rear bumper area and fitted it with full LED tail lamps. Additionally, the beauty and the luxury of the GLS are enhanced by chrome details like the roof rails, shoulder-line trim strips, underguard, side skirt trim and luggage compartment handle.

For those seeking a more athletic GLS appearance, they could opt for the Sport exterior, which is available for the GLS550.

This exterior gives the GLS550 a muscular look with the addition of distinct front and rear aprons, side flaps in vehicle color, side running boards, and 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels.

Customers could also avail of the Night package for a more exclusive GLS550. For those wanting to further personalize their GLS, they could choose from an array of standard and metallic paint finishes, including two special editions in designo Diamond White and designo Cardinal Red. They could also add in new light-alloy wheels in varied designs.

Interior Design

Complementing the elegant and quality exterior is a posh interior that comfortably accommodates up to seven passengers. Comfort is further supported by the fact that passengers are treated to ample elbow and headroom in all three seat rows.

Furthermore, the center seat row may be placed into a cargo position so that use of the luggage section could be optimized. For those seeking better air quality inside the GLS, they could avail of the optional air ionization system.

Cabin luxuries include a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel wrapped in nappa leather as well as an instrument panel with color Media Display. Luxury is exuded by the wood/leather multifunction steering wheel as well as by ambient lighting that features three color shades.

It also features some well-proportioned trim elements -- black piano lacquer or a variety of woods -- on the instrument panel and door panels, which also come with retractable cup holder covers.

The new Mercedes GLS also features the optional COMAND Online, which includes an eight-inch color Media Display as well as an intuitive touchpad for delivering much-wanted connectivity and infotainment.

Also available for the GLS, as part of the mbrace service, is an extensive package of free Standard Services (automatic emergency call, Accident Recovery, breakdown assistance and after-sales service) and Remote Online Services.

Remote Online services, which come as standard with COMAND at no extra cost for the first five years, give GLS owners access to vehicle information – like status of windows and doors, mileage, tire pressures -- anywhere they may be.

Aside from the ambient lighting and trim elements, customers could also avail of any of the five interior color concepts available in genuine leather: black, ginger beige/espresso brown, saddle brown/black, crystal grey black or ginger beige/black.

On the other hand, the designo Exclusive nappa leather package is further refined by the addition of heated comfort seats in the front with upholstery in designo nappa leather and diamond quilting.

Meanwhile, the AMG Line interior provides the GLS with a sporty theme thanks to the inclusion of sports seats in Exclusive nappa leather and a three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel in a black Exclusive nappa leather finish.

The package also includes brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs and graduated instrument dials in a Checkered flag look. One of the main appeals of any Mercedes vehicle is the utmost concern for passenger safety. Mercedes GLS is all the more attractive because of its slew of both active and passive safety systems.

Well, the GLS is a dead luxury car without an engine powering it. That is precisely why Mercedes-Benz is offering an array of engines that could be fitted on the GLS. One of these engines is the V8 biturbo engine that powers the GLS550 4MATIC.

This engine features direct injection and churns out 449 hp (plus 20 hp compared to preceding model) of max output and at 516 lb-ft of peak torque. Another is the 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine – also with direct injection – that powers the GLS450 4MATIC with 362 hp of output and 369 lb-ft of torque available from 1,800 rpm.

The GLS450 4MATIC, just like all GLS models, features an ECO start/stop function. Standing at the top of the range is the GLS engine that powers the Mercedes-AMG GLS63. This engine develops 577 hp of max output (plus 27 hp compared to its predecessor) and 561 lb-ft of peak torque available from just 1,750 rpm.

Featuring an independent suspension, the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 has this engine mated to the revised AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission. This GLS comes, as standard, with AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes for optimum ride flexibility as well as a rear-biased AMG Performance all-wheel drive system.

Additionally, the GLS63 is also endowed with updated AMG design elements and high-quality elegant interior. On the other hand, the engine options for the Mercedes GLS include diesel units. For instance, the GLS350d 4MATIC is powered by a V6 diesel engine that develops 255 hp of output and 455 lb-ft. of torque.

All next-generation Mercedes GLS models – save the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 -- will be fitted with nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission as standard. This transmission could be complemented by optional low-range gearbox and center differential lock.
