Opel has revealed that it is preparing to upgrade its line-up and it is expected to start with the Crossland X and six other models. Much like the Mokka, the upgraded model will continue to end with the “X” in its name. This ensures that it will be part of the brand’s crossover program.
Opel has scheduled the official debut of this model in the early part of 2017. Through the Crossland X, the Germany-based automaker believes that this will start the move to crossovers that offer more space and are more athletic. In simple terms, Opel hopes that the Crossland X will be the larger alternative for the Mokka.
In addition to the Crossland X, Opel hopes that at next year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, it will present its newest compact crossover. This will be sold at the same time as the Zafira, a model that Opel created while working with PSA. Since the Zafira is considered as the Peugeot 3008’s sibling, it will have the same look with the difference being that it carries Opel badges. The other models that will be part of the upgrades include the new Insignia and even the three body variants, cross-country, estate, and sedan, of the Country Tourer, Grand Sport, and Sports Tourer.
According to Opel, the Grand Sport in particular is slated to debut next March during the Geneva Motor Show with the remaining two models to be unveiled by the second half of 2017. Rounding up the product range to be upgraded are the Vivaro and the battery-powered Ampera-e.
Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann revealed that when it comes to the design, the Crossland X will have elements like that of the Adam lifestyle mini model. In addition, he added, this model will use the same platform as that of the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Peugeot 2008. Starting with this model, the “X” lettering will ensure that the brand’s CUVs can be differentiated from the standard versions. According to Neumann, the name was chosen because it brought with it a more athletic mind-set and an adventurous one.
Unveiled during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show held last March, the updated Mokka X was revealed to have a new design for the exterior and the interior with the latest in infotainment systems installed. Opel said the use of “X” on the name was to put more focus on the rugged personality of future crossover and SUV models. One highlight of the exterior was the horizontal grille that had a wing shape.
The surfaces are now more sculpted and they utilized less of plastic inserts. In addition to the 1.6-liter diesel engine with output of 136 PS, the brand is also offering the 1.4-liter engine with Direct Injection Turbo capable of delivering power at 152 PS. The power generated is transferred to the wheels through the automatic 6-speed gearbox.
