Shelby American celebrates golden year of Super Snake with 2017 Anniversary Edition

Article by Christian A., on January 23, 2017

The renowned Shelby Super Snake is now 50 years old! As we greet the Super Snake a “happy birthday” or a “happy anniversary,” Shelby itself is celebrating half a century of this ultra-high performance muscle car with a new generation car.

Just like its 1967 and 2007 predecessors, the 2017 Shelby Super Snake is based on the Ford Mustang. For the latest generation of the Shelby Super Snake, the base was the 2017 Ford Mustang GT Fastback. A number of tweaks have been made to transform the 2017 Ford Mustang GT into the 2017 Shelby Super Snake. Shelby American and Ford Performance worked hand in hand to deliver the latest generation of the Super Snake, with the cooperation of partners like Borla, Michelin and Wilwood.

At its finest form, the 2017 Ford Mustang GT – powered by an already powerful 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine – could provide 435 hp of output at 6,500 rpm and 400 lb.-ft. of torque available at 4,250 rpm. However, as powerful as it is, the Mustang GT is no match for the Shelby Super Snake. The numbers say it all. The now supercharged V8 engine in the Shelby Super Snake is rated to deliver 670 hp, or around 54 percent more power than on the Ford Mustang GT.

Not only that, clients could strengthen the capability of this engine by availing of either a Whipple or Kenne Bell superchargers. Once this option is availed, the Super Snake’s V8 engine could now deliver more than 750 hp of output. The new torque figure is not given, although Shelby revealed that in this optional package with automatic transmission, the Super Snake could sprint from zero to 60 mph is just 3.5 seconds and can dash to a quarter mile in 10.9 seconds

To prep the Shelby Super Snake for such performance, necessary modifications have to be made. For instance, the suspension of the Shelby Super Snake makes of exclusive dampers, sway bars and springs as well as bushings – all fitted according to Ford or Shelby specifications.

Moreover, the latest generation of the Shelby Super Snake rides on a set of 20-inch Forged Aluminum Wheels -- in black finish or polished – and wrapped in Shelby spec performance tires. Taking care of stopping and decelerating power are six-piston calipers on floating rotors on the front and four-piston calipers at the rear – all from Wilwood. These brakes are complemented by a Shelby exclusive brake/bearing duct cooling system.

On the exterior, the 2017 Super Snake features body components engineered by Shelby like its hood, grilles, rockers and rocker splitters. Other Shelby-engineered components include the front splitter and rear spoiler, as well as rear diffuser, rear tail panel and lower rear splitter. The Super Snake also features Shelby-exclusive Integrated LED light assemblies (fog lights, marker lamps and turn-signal indicators). Of course, the 2017 Super Snake comes with 50th anniversary badges and stripes.

Inside, 50th anniversary logos on the seats and floor mats can be found while Official Shelby Serial number (1 to 500) is displayed on a dash plaque. The 2017 Super Snake also features special door sill plates and gauge cluster with exclusive Shelby by Autometer wireless gauges.

Shelby American will only build and offer 500 examples of the 2017 Shelby Super Snake, which is available at a starting price of $69,995.
