Audi's new flagship model is finally here: the 2018 Audi A8 (D5). In the past couple of months, the company has continuously teased us with photos and short videos of the A8 and what features it will be offering. Other than the teasers, it even made an appearance in the latest Spiderman: Homecoming movie.
Well, today is the day, and we have got all the specs from Audi. At first glance, it doesn't look very different from its predecessor. But don’t fret as its new features inside are certain to blow you away. Overall, the 2018 model year is larger than it was before, and it comes in 12 new colours - and 3 of those are new.
On the exterior, the first thing that one will notice is the single frame grille, and the new lasers within the HD Matrix LED high-beam headlamps. This new system doubles the range of the lights at speeds of over 43 mph.
Now moving on to the much cooler features that can be found in the interior, the 2018 A8 gets a new virtual cockpit and a digital instrument cluster with an HD display of 1,920 x 720 pixels. The 10.5-inch infotainment system has a new multimedia interface that relies on touchscreen, voice commands, and comes with steering wheel controls.
What the new A8 can boast of is the number of voice commands it has - to be specific, it has 41 driver assistance systems. Furthermore, the MMI can have six user profiles with 400 different functions. How cool is that? Some of these features include the usual "smart" navigation system, HUD adjustments, camera and sensor configurations, plus many more.
A8 L now makes your ride extra comfortable with the relaxation seats, not only with heating/cooling functions, but with massaging functions too - even for the feet.
The new autopilot system now uses the new lasers to scan the surroundings, together with the radar to allow the car to drive the car in heavy traffic without the help of a human driver. As long as the car is moving under 37 miles per hour, the driver can enjoy a hands-off ride. This feature also lets the car park by itself with the use of a smartphone.
Audi announced that all the A8s will have a hybrid setup. A 340 horsepower 3.0 liter petrol V6 engine and a 286 horsepower 3.0-liter TDI diesel will be available on the release date. Within a few months, Audi will release 4.0 liter variants as well, a petrol engine delivering 460 hp and a diesel engine which delivers 435 hp.
The active suspension, which we have seen before, allows the car to adjust its suspension automatically when it sees bumps on the road.
Will all those features, do not expect the 2018 Audi A8 to be cheap. The A8 has a starting price of €90,600 ($103,000), while the L trim will cost you at least €94,100 ($107,000). That is about $20,000 more expensive than the current model.
