2018 Audi R8 V10 Plus comes standard with laser headlights upon US launch

Article by Christian A., on April 10, 2017

Audi’s high-tech laser headlights are coming to the United States. Moreover, they won’t be just an available option, but rather, these are a standard lighting unit on the 2018 Audi R8 V10 Plus, the premium carmaker’s ultimate flagship for its sports car range. This means the US-bound 2018 Audi R8 V10 Plus won’t be just the fastest and most powerful production model that Audi has, but it will also be the most advanced in terms of lighting technology.

Audi’s laser light technology was first seen on its R8 exclusive edition models, of which only 25 exclusive examples were made. These laser lights – complemented by dynamic front turn signals – features a characteristic blue light signature in the headlight housing. This means that if an R8 has a blue light emanating from the headlights, it is equipped with laser lights.

Of course, light emitting diode (LED) units are still the technology behind the low and high beams for the R8 V10 plus. However, Audi wanted to boost the visibility for the driver when moving at higher speeds. Thus, when the Audi R8 V10 plus reaches speed of 40 mph and above – as situations permit, the laser lights are activated and then projects low and wide beam of light on the road on front, thereby supplementing the high beam projected by the LED units. Interestingly, the R8 was also the first Audi model to feature all-LED headlights (2008). The new laser lights as well as full LED headlights are also available as an option for the Audi R8 V10.

Aside from the laser lights, the 2018 Audi R8 is also offered with an array of standard and optional features. For instance, all models of the new 2018 Audi R8 are provided as standard with Audi smartphone interface for compatible devices. All models now feature Audi sport badge on front grille, replacing the quattro badge. All V10 models now feature, as standard, Anthracite high-gloss inlays, 19-inch 5-double-spoke design forged wheels with silver finish, as well as Mythos black side blades (as part of Black optic package). The new R8 V10 plus is provided with Carbon sigma high-gloss inlays as standard.

Optional packages on the new 2018 Audi R8 include the new Black optic package, which includes 20-inch, 10-spoke Y design forged wheels in a high gloss Anthracite, gloss black exhaust tips, and a Black optic exterior trim.

For the 2018 model, the new Audi R8 has prices of $164,900 for the V10 Coupe, $177,100 for the V10 Spyder, and $194,400 for the V10 plus Coupe. The prices exclude destination charge of $1,250 as well as taxes, title, options, and dealer charges.

Press Release

Audi of America announces 2018 R8 V10 plus will feature standard laser lights

The fastest and most powerful Audi production model ever – the R8 V10 plus – is now also the first Audi model line to offer laser light technology.

Originally debuting on 25 R8 exclusive edition models, laser light technology is the latest in a long line of lighting innovations from the four rings. The R8 has pioneered many of these innovations, as the first Audi model to offer all-LED headlights in 2008 and now as the first model line to offer laser high beams. In addition, the R8 was also the first Audi vehicle to couple the laser light with dynamic front turn signals.

An identifying characteristic of the laser headlights is their blue light signature in the headlight housing. The laser beam pattern, which is active at speeds of 40 mph and above (when conditions permit), supplements the LED high beam and greatly enhances visibility for the driver by projecting a low and wide beam of light on the road ahead.

Model Year Changes for the 2018 R8 V10 coupe, spyder and V10 plus

The R8, which shares approximately 50 percent of the same parts, including the V10 engine with the R8 LMS racecar, now also features exciting new design options in addition to more standard features. New for 2018, all R8 models will come standard equipped with Audi smartphone interface for compatible devices. A newly available Black optic package includes 20-inch, 10-spoke Y design forged wheels in a high gloss Anthracite with summer tires, gloss black exhaust tips, Mythos black side blades (V10 models only) and a Black optic exterior trim. Full LED headlights with Audi laser light are available on V10 models and are standard equipment on the V10 plus.
