BMW makes a prototype of wireless charger for the 2018 530e iPerformance

BMW just announced that the 2018 530e iPerformance will be getting another option - that is a wireless charging station instead of the standard plug-in.

The iPerformance originally comes with a plug in that is rated at 3.7 kilowatts. With this rate, the 9.2 kWh battery can be replenished in less than three hours with a wall box.

But to ensure safety, charging power through the electric socket is limited, so it will take about five hours to fully charge the battery.

The wireless charging option, on the other hand, has a rate of 3.2 kilowatts. This will take a little longer than three hours to change. The system is built into the 530e’s on board infotainment system, displaying the charger’s alignment on the screen. Green and blue lines on the monitor help the driver determine whether the car’s battery is aligned with the wireless charger, while also informing the driver when it begins charging.

The company showed us the prototype of the wireless charger. It comes with a portable base pad with integrated primary coil that can be installed in a garage or any open place. The other component, the secondary coil is then attached underneath the vehicle. As both coils make contact, a magnetic field is generated - this produces electricity that is transmitted sans cables, and can charge up to 3.2 kilowatts.

With just three and a half hours of charging time, this form of power supply is very convenient for hybrid car owners. BMW currently offers a Digital Charging Service that depends on tariffs and solar energy use.

To ensure the lowest possible electricity cost, the service adjusts customer’s charging plans with tariff-optimized charging. This service mainly focuses on two things: the use of solar power and optimizing battery charging in terms of tariffs.

When customers have a BMW Wallbox Connect, electricity that comes from their solar power system will be prioritized for charging. The system tells users how much power has been generated based on its output data and the latest weather forecast. If the measuring instrument is installed, solar power can be diverted to provide emission-free mobility, that is after the system determines which proportion of the solar power is not being used. In other words, this lets users integrate their all-electric or hybrid power units into their home environment and their personal energy set-up.

The Bavarian company said that “BMW Wireless Charging for the high-voltage battery will be made available as an option for the 530e iPerformance” starting next year. This technology gets rid of the cables needed in conventional charging systems. This is definitely one exciting thing for BMW users.
