Ever since BMW unveiled the first-ever BMW X2 sports activity coupe, the German premium carmaker has already gained the interest of luxury customers in the United States willing to wait until spring 2018 before they could get behind its wheel.

While BMW said that it would announce the pricing of the 2018 X2 near its market launch, order guides gathered by CarsDirect, showed that the sharply styled SAV would have a price that starts at just below $40,000 – or $39,395 including the $995 destination charge. This price applies to base model of this SAV, the 2018 X2 xDrive28i and represents a premium of $2,500 over the X1 xDrive28i at $36,895.

At a few hundred dollars below $40,000, the X2 xDrive28i is powered by the latest generation 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine with a twin-tailpipe design. Employing TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve lift, this engine is able to 228 hp of max output between 5,000 rpm and 6,000 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of peak torque available between 1,450 rpm and 4,500 rpm. Power is sent to the wheels via an eight -speed Steptronic automatic transmission, with distribution managed by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The X2 xDrive28i is estimated to be able to accelerate from nil to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds.

As standard, the 2018 BMW X2 xDrive28i comes with SensaTec seats and a seven-speaker audio system while riding on 18-inch Y-Spoke alloy wheels. For those who are willing to go beyond $40,000, they could add the Convenience Package ($2,350) that includes a panoramic roof, auto-dimming mirrors, power-folding mirrors and lumbar support, as well as other features. A Premium Package is also available at $2,600.

BMW is also offering a Driver Assistance Package that costs only $700 and that includes safety features like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and low-speed emergency braking. However, the Driver Assistance Package could only be availed for the BMW X2 xDrive28i when grouped with the Convenience Package and Premium Package, bringing the total price for the three packages to $5,650.

Meanwhile, the German luxury carmaker also offers the M SportX Package, which for $4,650 makes the X2 xDrive28i sportier by adding in a sport-tuned transmission and M Sport suspension that make the SAV sit 0.4-inch lower to the ground. An M steering wheel, distinct bodywork and 19-inch Bicolor wheels as well as most of the elements included in the Convenience Package are also part of M SportX Package. When this package -- along with the Dynamic Handling Package ($600) -- is availed, the X2 xDrive28i X2 xDrive28i comes with a price tag of $44,645.
