Be ready to pay a bit more for the diesel-powered 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

Article by Christian A., on July 23, 2017

When Chevrolet came out with the 2018 Equinox last September, the facelifted model was offered in a diesel option for the first time, plus it weighed much less at 400 pounds (181 kilograms). Now, we have an idea how much the diesel variant will cost us.

First off, the base trim with the 1.5 liter turbocharged engine starts at $27,695, while the gas-powered Equinox LT costs $30,090. Now, the diesel equivalent of the LT is asking for $31,435 including destination according to CarsDirect. That makes it more expensive than the two other gas models. Specifically, there’s a gap of $1,345 compared to its counterpart 2.0-liter LT gas engine and a $3,740 difference with the 1.5-liter turbo engine.

With the extra few thousands added in, you will also get 17-inch aluminum wheels, cloth seats, and a 7-inch infotainment system that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want a slightly wider infotainment system, with multiple USB ports and a power sunroof, you can add the Sun and Infotainment Package for an extra $2,395.

If that is not enough for you still, there is the Premier Diesel being offered for $33,390. This will give you a much more equipped ride - upgrading to a set of 18-inch wheels, leather seats, dual exhaust and an eight-inch touchscreen with dual-zone climate control. In fairness to the Premier Diesel, it is actually $600 cheaper than the gas equivalent. You can even switch to an all-wheel drive for an extra $1,750.

The Equinox looks great from a styling standpoint - from its grille, and the profile’s C-pillar paired with the contrasting D pillar. Safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and rear park assist come standard with the Premier and LT trims.

Whichever trim you go for, all diesel-based Chevy Equinox models will be getting the 1.9 turbocharged engine with 137 horsepower (102 kilowatts) and 204 pound-feet of torque. This engine will be working with a six-speed manual gearbox and has a 32 city and 40 highway mpg rating. The Chevy Equinox is still considered to be one of the most fuel-efficient compact crossovers out there today.

It is likely that the Equinox Diesel meets EPA emission regulations, unlike its VW, Audi, and Porsche counterparts that cost so much, and yet are caught up in the long-running Volkswagen emission scandal.

You can already get yourself the more affordable gas-powered Equinox, while the diesel option should be out in dealerships in a month or so. Meanwhile, a diesel version of the updates 2018 Mazda CX-5 will be hitting the market sometime this year.
