Were you once a fan of those really old Mustangs, the ones from the early 1960s? Because if you were, then Ford has something new that will definitely catch your attention. No, it is not a replica of the old model, but it is a refreshed 2018 Mustang that has been given an optional package they call the Pony Package. Cute name, huh?
Pony Package adds the good old pony back in its chrome corral on the front grille as a throwback from over half a century ago. However, this package can only be applied to the 2.3 liter turbocharged 2018 Mustang, sorry V8 buyers. If you still didn’t know, the naturally aspirated V6 has been discontinued. Before the 2018 EcoBoost model, it was just the 2015MY that had a similar look when Ford offered the anniversary package.
The package is not just about the badge if you are wondering. Ford will be adding a few more upgrades including a set of 19-inch polished alloy wheels and a tri-bar pony logo on the rear decklid. Stripes have been added on the lower side of the car’s profile, and finishing off the new look are the brighter beltline and window trim, which are only available for the coupe.
As for the interior, there are not a lot of changes except for the premium carpeted floor mats, with an embroidered pony of course. But don’t sweat, as you will still find that 12-inch digital instrument cluster and the driver-assistance technology that comes standard with the 2018 model year.
Last week, the Ford Mustang’s ordering guide has been leaked. We learned that there will also be a Performance Package that EcoBoost customers can choose, if they are not into the Pony Package. The Performance one will also be providing a nice set of 19 x 9 inch black wheels with 255/40 summer tires, a rear wing, re-tuned chassis, stability control, power steering, and anti-lock brakes.
The Mustang GT, on the other hand, can be made even beefier with the Performance Package. It has more additions than those offered for the EcoBoost variant like Brembo brakes with large rotors, heavy-duty front springs, and a front splitter below the fascia.
You can get your hands on the optional Pony Package when the 2018 Mustang is released in early October. But so far, Ford has not released the price list for the 2018 Mustang, as well as the optional packages. For now, we will have to wait for the company to share more details as the launch date of the said model edges closer.
