Honda this week announced that its all-new 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will arrive at US dealerships with a starting price of $33,400 beginning on the first of December. Because the Clarity PHEV is qualified for the full federal tax credit deduction program, the all-new Clarity sedans can be had for as low as $26,790 and $29,990 including destination charges, minus the supposed $7,500 federal taxes.
The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid Touring, which will be offered with a suggested retail price of $35,600 will have a more upscale feel to it over the standard variant. Exclusive to this level are the Ultrasuede interior, perforated leather-trimmed seats, a four-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat and a driver seat with eight-way power adjustment with two-position memory.
While a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a navigation system with charging infrastructure information are part of the Touring package, both sedans will be featuring the same 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and heated side mirrors. The LED taillights, auto headlights and daytime running lights in LED are just among the many standard features shared by the two model trims.
Both Touring and standard trim level will in fact benefit from the latest tech features from Honda Sensing safety suite and driver assistance technologies. Included on both are the front, side and knee airbags (for the driver and front passenger), side curtain airbags, vehicle stability assist and Lane Watch assist.
Apart from that, the new Clarity boasts a number integrated applications such as Sirius XM, HD Radio, Home Link and Pandora. These, in addition to the steering wheel audio controls, 8-inch audio display, USB interface and multi-angle rear view camera, will help make these features more enjoyable to use.
Underneath, the hybrid sedan is equipped with the 181-hp electric motor that generates up to 232-lb-ft of torque, harvesting its power from both gas engine and 17-kWh battery. Note that the 240V battery pack takes only two and a half hours to recharge, while the motor hybrid powertrain has a 212hp total system output.
On a full charge, the PHEV’s EPA range runs at 47 miles (76km), thus, making it one of the best hybrid models for having earned the highest all-electric range ratings. Honda’s upcoming plug-in hybrid has also received an EPA fuel economy rating of 110 combined MPGe and a 44 (city), 40 (high-way) and 43 (combined) miles per gallon rating, placing at it at the lead compared to all the top tier five-seater hybrid sedans when running only on gasoline.
To allow its driver to maximize his or her driving performance as well as the vehicle’s efficiency, the Clarity PHEV comes with three optional driving modes such as Sport, Economy and Normal. There is also the HV mode that improves the PHEV’s battery performance and can be enabled with any of those three setups.
