There is both good and bad news for fans of the Infiniti QX80 sports utility vehicle. Bad news is that this luxury SUV remains at its current second generation even after eight years in the market. Good news is that for the 2018 model year, the Infiniti QX80 is getting a major refresh. Infiniti has just unveiled the latest iteration of the Infiniti QX80 SUV at the 2017 Dubai International Motor Show.
Thankfully, what Infiniti implemented in the latest iteration of its premium full-size SUV is more than just a refresh as it’s a major update that involves exterior styling. According to the premium carmaker, the 2018 Infiniti QX80 is taking the brand’s ‘Powerful Elegance’ design language in a bold new direction, thereby creating a dynamic, modern and commanding exterior appearance. Overall, the new Infiniti QX80 now comes with bigger and bolder looks.
To this extent, the styling changes made on the new Infiniti QX80 are very much noticeable up front. For instance, the front end of the new 2018 Infiniti QX80 is now dominated by a larger grille, covering more space on the façade of the SUV. Compared to the headlamps of the outgoing QX80, the ones on the 2018 iteration have been raised to be more in line with the top end of the massive grille.
In addition, the new Infiniti QX80 is provided with a new lower fascia with broader apertures. The latest iteration of Infiniti’s full-size SUV also comes with a number of subtle visual tweaks, but all of these changes combine to make the Infiniti QX80 look more prominent. For instance, the fenders come with new vents while the rear fascia and gate also sport a new appearance. Furthermore, the new Infiniti QX80 now features updated rear lights.
The new Infiniti QX80 also comes with tweaks inside its cabin, although the changes were more restrained. The interior comes with the same cabin layout but the seats and the doors now come with new seats and doors. The refined and spacious cabin of the new QX80 now makes use of high-quality materials and advanced drive-assist technologies – all complementing its hand-crafted finish.
Unfortunately though, the 2018 Infiniti QX80 retains much of its built, mechanicals and underpinnings when the first of the second generation SUV was launched in 2010. It still comes with a body-on-frame construction and is powered by the same 5.6-liter V8 engine that delivers around 400 hp of output. Power is transmitted to either four wheels or the rear ones through a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
According to Christian Meunier, Infiniti Global Division Vice President, the new QX80 -- designed and engineered to enable customers to travel everywhere in luxury – was unveiled to the global public in Dubai to signify the strategic importance of the Middle East for the premium brand.
Infiniti is producing the new QX80 at its Kyushu production facility in Japan, with sales of the SUV set to commence in North America, Asia and the Middle East towards the end of 2017.
