Similar to its automotive adversaries, Kia is doubling its efforts in filling each gap in its line-up of high-riding crossovers and SUVs. Now the South Korean company has unveiled a small, city-friendly model that is called the "Stonic". The 2018 Kia Stonic will be geared to go head to head against Toyota C-HR, Ford Ecosport, Nissan Juke, Hyundai Kona and Honda HR-V. Kia claimed that this new release will be one of its hottest crossovers to date.
According to the Korean vehicle manufacturer, 21% of consumers are choosing to upgrade their beloved hatchback into a taller and bigger vehicle, and its new 2018 Stonic might address these needs and be a strong contender in the crossover range. The Kia Stonic has a significant advantage – its much desired ride height. That’s because the crossover was based on the same platform as of the new Kia Rio.
Its plastic cladding and contrasting roof rails add a more tough aesthetic. The latest crossover is seen sporting the familiar "tiger nose grille" that is located between a pair of detailed headlights, and the new car can be fitted with an eye-catching roof that has an array of 20 different two-tone color combinations to choose from. For the interior space, Kia has given a high priority in this area, with the new crossover offering a class-leading shoulder room. Although the cabin is fitted with some scratchy plastics, don’t worry as the cabin is solid enough to tolerate a high force impact, including tantrums from a toddler.
The Stonic's center console is equipped with Kia's newest touchscreen infotainment display, which offers the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. For the passengers, you are in good hands as you are also given comfortable head and legroom. Almost all vehicles have a raised middle floor that can be pesky for the middle passenger, but for the Stonic you can breathe a sigh of relief as those middle passengers can rest their feet made possible with a flat floor. In the rear, a wide-opening hatch uncovers a 352 L trunk. In Europe, the Kia Stonic will be offered with a choice of 4 engines. Gasoline units will be equipped with the latest turbocharged 1.0 L that produces 116hp, a 1.25 L engine that is identical to the recent Picanto, a tier-topper at 1.4 L rounds off the set. For the diesel set-up, only one choice is available -- the 1.6 L unit which is claimed to be the most environmental-friendly option.
One can avail of the Stonic with a whole array of active safety equipment that includes an emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, driver attention warning and blind spot detection. The most important tech feature is the Rear Cross Traffic Alert which can keep one safe while reversing out of busy areas like supermarket parking spaces.
The 2018 Kia Stonic will be released to the European market during the latter part of this year. The Stonic is expected to face solid adversaries, however the crossover is showing a promising potential with growing momentum. Specific details of the US-spec will be revealed in the coming months.
