South Korean carmaker Kia will try to follow up the success of its Sportage compact sports utility vehicle by introducing a smaller SUV (subcompact) in the United Kingdom in the guise of the new 2018 Kia Stonic. The new Stonic – Kia’s first entry into the B-SUV segment – will be available in the UK for as a low as £16,295 starting October 23, 2017.
Underpinned by the same platform used on the latest iteration of the Kia Rio, the new Kia Stonic will be available in two different trim grades (Stonic 2 and Stonic First Edition) and three different engines (a 1.4-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, a 1.0-liter T-GDi turbocharged petrol unit and a 1.6-liter CRDi turbodiesel).
The Kia Stonic 2 trim could be powered by any of three available engines, with the version having the 1.4-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine (with output of 98 PS or 97hp) under its hood serving as the entry-level model. This base model – featuring a starting price of £16,295—is provided as standard with bi-function projection headlights, LED daytime running lights, cornering lights, electrically adjustable heated side mirrors, rear parking sensors, roof rails and 17-inch alloy wheels. It is also provided with 3.5-inch supervision cluster, multi-function steering wheel, a six-speaker sound system and all-round electric windows as well as remote locking, Bluetooth with music streaming and 60:40 split rear seats.
Customers may also avail of the 1.0-liter T-GDi turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 118 PS (116 hp) for the Kia Stonic 2, bringing the price up by £700 to £16,995 ($22,577). The Kia Stonic 2 could also be powered by the 1.6-liter CRDi turbodiesel that is derived from the Kia Cee'd, generating 108 PS (106 hp) of output. This version has a starting price of £17,795 ($23,640).
On the other hand, the Kia Stonic First Edition serves as the current top model. It is distinguished from the Stonic 2 by having a two-tone finish both on the exterior and exterior. The roof, rear spoiler and wing mirror casings could be finished in black, lime green, red or orange, depending on primary main body color. Matching accents could be found around the lower center console and display screen areas. The Kia Stonic First Edition features a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, push-button start and keyless entry as well as automatic air conditioning and rear privacy glass.
This flavor of the Kia Stonic could be powered by the 118-PS 1.0-liter GDi petrol (starting price of £19,695) or the 108-PS 1.6-liter CRDi diesel engines (base price of £19,695).
All engines for the new 2018 Kia Stonic are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and come with Kia’s stop/start system. All versions have the power from the engine sent to the front wheels. All versions of the Kia Stonic come with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Hill-start Assist.
