When Mercedes-Benz announced that it would unveil the 2018 Mercedes E-Class Coupe at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (or Detroit Auto Show), many were already expecting that the German carmaker would also reveal that an AMG version will follow. And now, it seems that an AMG version would be arriving.
According to a report by Autocar, an AMG variant of the Mercedes-Benz E Class coupe is making its entrance in the second half of 2017 -- of course, this would be after the German carmaker has released the standard E Class, probably between the first and second quarters of the same year. This hot performance model would be the Mercedes-AMG E 50 Coupe.
The 2018 2-door E Class coupe would be Mercedes’ counter to the Audi A5 and the BMW 6 Series. For now, we could only speculate on the actual appearance of the new Mercedes E Class coupe from the looks of the test model, which remains under camouflage. It seems, however, Mercedes’ “sensual purity” design has greatly influenced the new E Class coupe, judging from its fuller body, sloping roofline and smoother shape also seen on the latest coupe versions of the C Class and S Class.
Having a project codename of “C238” means the new E Class coupe will be underpinned by Mercedes’ Benz’s latest modular rear architecture -- MRA platform – which is much larger based from its wider tracks and wheelbase measurements. The new E-Class coupe measures 4,827 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,430 mm in height, which means that it is 141 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 25 mm taller than the C-Class coupe.
The 2018 Mercedes E Class will be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show, it is the appearance of this model that would serve as the basis of the new AMG E 50 Coupe. Of course, the AMG E 50 Coupe would have a sportier look, with quite a number of aerodynamic tweaks and treatments, as well as a powerful engine worthy of being called a performance-laden AMG.
According to Autocar, the AMG E 50 coupe is bound to be among the first Mercedes models to be powered by the carmaker’s new M256 in-line six-cylinder petrol engine, an electrically turbocharged 3.0-liter powerplant that could deliver up to 402 bhp. The M256 in-line six-cylinder petrol engine features an integrated starter generator as well as an electric auxiliary compressor that could boost performance as needed. Since the AMG E 50 coupe is a performance model, Mercedes might tweak the M256 to provide increased levels of output and torque.
At the launch of the E Class coupe, Mercedes will be offering five models, powered by four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. These models include the E 200 Coupé, the E300 Coupe, the E400 Coupe, the E 220 d Coupé and the E350d Coupe.
