Subaru customers and fans in the United States have been somewhat envious of their counterparts in Japan. This is because Subaru, most of the time, launches high-performance special edition models exclusive for the Japanese market. But this time, American fans and customers are getting what they’ve long wanted.
This coming spring 2018, Subaru will commence sales of not just one, but two hardcore limited edition models – the 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA and the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS. Each model will be available with just 500 units, with the WRX STI Type RA priced at $48,995 and the BRZ tS at $33,495. Prices exclude the $860 destination and delivery cost.
The 2018 WRX STI Type RA offers higher levels of performance through its reduced weight as well as upgrades made to its engine and suspension. Its 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine delivers 310 hp thanks to a new cold air intake, high flow performance exhaust, a retuned ECU and stronger pistons. The gearing of its six-speed manual transmission has also been revised.
Supporting the power boost is the upgrade to a Bilstein STI sport-tuned suspension that employs special Bilstein dampers. Stability is enhanced through a modified Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system. Furthermore, the 2018 WRX STI Type RA is offered, as standard, with a carbon fiber roof panel, a carbon fiber pedestal wing as well as BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels. The spare tire has been removed on this special edition of the WRX STI.
Distinguishing the Type RA from other WRX STIs are its exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accents on the front mesh grille and new rear bumper cover. Sporting the Type RA badge on rear deck lid, this limited edition comes with an STI front underspoiler.
Inside, the WRX STI Type RA is provided with Recaro performance design front seats with red bolsters and stitching. An embossed STI logo can be found on the head restraints. An individually numbered plaque is mounted on the center console. In addition, the WRX STI Type RA is provided with the Subaru Starlink 7.0-inch Multimedia Plus System, SiriusXM All Access Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link.
Meanwhile, the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS offers higher levels of handling, control, stability and steering response. This is thanks to the STI-tuned suspension (front and rear SACHS dampers and coil springs), STI flexible V-brace in the engine bay, as well as new draw stiffeners on the chassis and sub-frame.
The 2018 Subaru BRZ tS rides on lightweight STI wheels shod in 215/40 R 18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires and features a high-performance braking system that employs Brembo rotors, four-piston front calipers and two-piston rear calipers. The special edition also comes with a manually adjustable exclusive STI carbon fiber rear spoiler, as well as the addition of STI underspoilers (front, rear and side).
