2018 VW Atlas kicks off first-month sales in US and the numbers are impressive

Article by Christian A., on July 30, 2017

2018 Volkswagen Atlas is proving to be one of the German carmaker’s best-selling vehicles in the United States after having recently logged a full month of sales in the market. And that’s despite the fact that even some of its own designers weren’t really satisfied with its supposed boring blocky design.

But now, the US consumers have spoken and seemingly vouch for the appeal of the new 2018 VW Atlas. For the month of June 2017 alone, VW sold 27,377 vehicles in the US. That number may seem small, but it already exceeded the 23,809 units sold by VW in the same month in 2016. Of the 27,377 vehicles that VW sold in the US, 2,413 units were of the new Atlas. That means nearly one of 11 vehicles (8.8 percent) that the carmaker has delivered to customers in the country is an Atlas SUV.

To note, June 2017 marks the first full month of sales for the 2018 VW Atlas. This implies that it could be too early to determine whether the new Atlas would have a definite impact on VW’s falling SUV sales in the US. Although signs for the Atlas are positive, VW’s other SUV offerings aren’t performing well in terms of sales. In fact, only 14 percent of VW’s total sales in the first half of 2017 were utility vehicles, which should be weird considering that SUVs are now in high demand in this part of the world.

In fact, the US auto industry generates more than 40 percent of its sales from SUVs and crossovers. While other carmakers are cashing in on their SUV offerings, VW has found it hard to sell its utility vehicles. The German carmaker is expecting things to change with the influx of the new VW Atlas and the impending arrival of the new generation of the Tiguan compact SUV.

It is quite encouraging for the German carmaker to know that the all-new VW Atlas also sold more than other existing SUVs in the market like the Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Flex and Mazda CX-9. Of course, these other SUVs aren’t exactly on their latest generation, unlike the Atlas that is entirely new inside and out.

2018 VW Atlas has a starting price of $31,425 (Atlas S with 2.0-liter turbo). Starting price for the top-end model (Atlas SEL Premium) is around $50,275. The new VW Atlas is available in five models: Atlas S, Atlas SE, Atlas SE with Technology, Atlas SEL, and Atlas SEL Premium.

The new VW Atlas is part of Volkswagen’s plans to establish itself as an expert in all-wheel-drive capability and to penetrate further the US market. Upon launch in the US, the 2018 Atlas will be offered with two engines: a turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-liter 4-cylinder TSI mill offering up to 238 hp (177 kW) of output and a 3.6-liter VR6 engine delivering up to 280 hp (208 kW) of output.
