These tests are being carried out also to ensure that new 8 Series Coupe does not only offer remarkable racing performance but also long-distance ride comfort.
In terms of performance, the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe could be considered as an embodiment of the true potential of the 8 Series Coupe. The perfect recipe of different dynamic elements -- such as a completely redeveloped V8 engine, state-of-the-art intelligent four-wheel drive technology, Integral Active Steering, an active rear axle differential lock, and adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilization – allows the new M850i xDrive Coupe to blend superb levels of sportiness and comfort.
The redeveloped V8 engine in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is tuned to deliver just the right amount of torque and audio track for relaxed cruising. While the new V8 engine in the new M850i xDrive Coupe weighs the same its predecessor mill, it is now more powerful by 50 kW (plus 68 hp to 390 kW/ 530 hp), and by 100 Nm (to 750 Nm of peak torque available at 1,800 rpm). This powerful mill is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission that boasts of expanded spread and shorter shift times.
Interestingly, when the Sport or Sport+ mode is activated, both the power deliver as well as audio of the V8 engine become more dynamic. In addition, the function of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the four-wheel drive system, and electronically controlled dampers are now adjusted according to the selected mode.
As expected, the new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe already benefits from the low center of gravity as well as stiff body and suspension of the new 8 Series Coupe. This allows the M850i xDrive Coupe to offer higher levels of agility and direct steering characteristics. However, M850i xDrive Coupe also benefits from standard Integral Active Steering and active roll stability as well as from the electronically controlled dampers.
BMW plans to commence sales of the 8 Series Coupe this year, with the M850i xDrive Coupe to follow later.
