BMW finally introduces its all-new X7 flagship SUV

It has been more than four years since BMW announced the imminent arrival of its largest sports utility vehicle ever. Now, the German premium carmaker is finally introducing its much-anticipated flagship SUV – the all-new BMW X7.

Set to be produced at the BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, the new BMW X7 will be launched to global market in March 2019.

The burly yet elegant exterior of the new BMW X7 essentially preaches the fact that it is large premium flagship SUV with huge intentions in the segment. Its exterior is wrapped in massive dimensions: 5,151 mm in length, 2,000 mm in width and 1,805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105 mm.

Exterior Design

Even in a glimpse, the new BMW X7 exudes authority, luxury and modernity, especially on its front end. The front section of the new X7 is defined by the large BMW roundel on the bonnet and the largest kidney grille ever donned by a BMW model.

This grille is flanked by slim twin headlights that make use of LED units as standard, although BMW Laserlight with Adaptive LED Headlights is optional. Inside, the headlights feature blue x-shaped elements that split up the hexagonal light sources. As standard, a horizontal chrome bar defines the structure of the wide lower air intake, while slim LED front fog lamps are integrated into front apron on either side of the aluminum underguard.

Meanwhile, the flanks of the new BMW X7 are marked by large windows and long, flowing roofline as well as rear doors that are longer than their front counterparts. A character line rises up to the rear end while chrome trim strips surround the door sills extending to the Air Breathers and rear apron. The rounded body-colored wheel arches accommodate large alloy wheels: 20-inch rims are standard while 21- and 22-inch versions are optional.

On the rear, the new BMW X7 is marked by slim LED rear lights as bridged by a chrome bar.

Interior Design

Inside, the new BMW X7 is large enough to accommodate seven occupants in three rows of seat as standard – two occupants in the front (full-sized seats), three in the second row (full-sized seats) and two more in the third row (seat bench). As an option, the X7 can be specified with two individual seats for the second row, featuring integrated armrests and comfort cushions.

The new BMW X7 features a sports leather steering wheel as well as large trim surfaces as framed with electroplated accent trips on the instrument panel and center console. It comes fitted with BMW Live Cockpit Professional that includes a 12.3-inch Control Display and a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Grouped neatly on the center console are the gear selector, the start/stop button, the iDrive Controller, the Driving Experience Control switch controls as well as the button for the electric parking brake and the buttons for the air suspension and optional off-road modes.

Fitted as standard on the new BMW X7 is a three-part panoramic glass roof, a four-zone automatic climate control as well as ambient lighting with precise LED contour lighting for the instrument panel, center console and door trim. Also standard is a hi-fi speaker system, which can be upgraded to the optional Harman Kardon surround sound system with 16 speakers or the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with 20 speakers and 1,500-watt amplifier.

In terms of load capacity, the new BMW X7 offers up to 326 liters when all seats are in use. By folding down the backrests of the seats in the second and third rows, the load capacity of the X7 can be hiked to 2,120 liters. Loading cargo into the X7 is easy thanks to standard air suspension that allows the SUV to be lowered at a single press touch of a button in the boot.

Powertrain

At launch, the new BMW X7 will be powered by two powerful petrol engines (only one for Europe) and two diesel engines. The BMW X7 xDrive50i (not available in Europe) will be powered by a newly developed twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that delivers 456 hp (340 kW) of max output and 479 lb.-ft. (649 Nm) of peak torque to allow the SUV to launch from nil to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds. Th.-e X7 xDrive40i will be served by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six unit that provides 335 hp (250 kW) of max output and 330 lb.-ft. (447 Nm) for a zero-to- 60 mph sprint time of 5.8 seconds.

On the other hand, the BMW X7 xDrive30d will feature a 3.0-liter inline six diesel engine generating up to 261 hp (195 kW) of output and up to 457 lb.-ft. (620 Nm) of torque. The BMW X7 M50d M Performance model, meanwhile, will be powered by a quad-turbo 3.0-liter turbo-diesel mill that could eke out up to 395 hp (294 kW) of output and up to 551 lb.-ft. (760 Nm) of torque.

All the engines for the new BMW X7 are mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, which boasts a wider gear ratio spread and new control electronics.

The new BMW X7 also features a number of standard and optional driver assistance systems like Cruise Control with braking function as well as Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function. Optionally available is the Driving Assistant Professional that includes Traffic Jam Assist, and the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. Also standard for the new X7 is the Park Distance Control (PDC) and Parking Assistant.
