Cadillac CT6 will apparently be getting a major power upgrade since the new V Sport model will be the first model to get a direct injected 4.2 liter biturbo V8 that is said to carry out 550 horsepower (410 kilowatts) and 627 pound feet (850 Newton metres) of torque in the top output, but there will also be a smaller, 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts) version.
The engine, supposedly has a completely clean sheet design. In fact, the engineering emphasized that despite the compact packaging, this can still produce substantial performance. Cadillac has this thing they called the “hot V” where the exhaust exits from the valley between the heads, instead of on the outside like that on most V8s. Aside from that, it also works with the two twin-scroll turbos in the exhaust that manifolds at the top of the engine. According to the automaker, this set up does not only create a tighter package, but also reduces turbo lag.
The engine is also made with lightweight materials like an aluminum block and pistons to cut down on weight. There is also a forged steel crankshaft and pistons, ensuring that the powerplant can handle the turbo’s 20 pounds (1.38 bar) of boost.
To give the engine more oxygen, and to maximize power output, the turbos that were installed feature a water to air intercooler for cooling the boosted air. Cadillac estimates that air charge temperature can be reduced by more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius) when this system is installed.
Jordan Lee, the engine’s chief engineer, said in his announcement that designing the all new engine really is the way to achieve the performance goals for the CT6 V Sport. It builds on the company’s well established turbocharging know how and forges new ground with innovative features that deliver exceptional performance.
Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac President then said that with the new and exclusive 4.2 liter Twin Turbo V8, the company’s performance technology will definitely reach new heights. He added that “the engineering prowess embodies the very spirit of Cadillac performance on and off the racetrack”.
The CT6 V Sport’s new engine will be working with the new engine’s 10 speed automatic gearbox, as well as a limited slip rear differential that will help with traction. Magnetic Ride Control dampers have been added to sharpen the handling, and a set of 19 inch Brembo brakes are the ones handling the performance sedan.
On the exterior, you would notice that the V Sport features a mesh grille and comes with LED headlights. The windows are surrounded with a gloss black trim, and the car now sits on a set of 20 inch wheels that are available in summer only tires.
