McLaren Automotive is unveiling in metal its quickest and most powerful Sports Series model – the new McLaren 600LT -- at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Built to dominate the race circuits and yet it is legal to be driven on the road, the new 600LT is the latest addition to McLaren’s Super Series family that already includes the McLaren 650S Coupe, 650S Spider, 675LT Coupe, 675LT Spider and 720S.
The new McLaren 600LT is effectively not only the latest Super Series model, but is also the latest McLaren to wear the Longtail (LT) badge. Taking inspiration from McLaren 675LT models and the McLaren Longtail F1 GTR racer, the new 600LT is laden with all the physical attributes of a Longtail like its longer rear diffuser, extended front splitter, fixed rear wing as well as elongated silhouette. Along with the flat carbon fiber floor, the distinct bodywork of 600LT help generate 100 kg of downforce at 250 km/h (155 mph), resulting to greater levels of grip and high-speed stability. The result is the most track-focused Super Series model from McLaren.
As expected, the new McLaren 600LT extensively employs carbon fiber. This material is used for the monocoque chassis and the new aerodynamic features. Along with other lightweight materials, carbon fiber helps the McLaren 600LT attain a lightest dry weight of 1,247 kg, with a power-to-weight ratio of 481 PS/ton.
The superb power-to-weight ratio of the new McLaren 600LT is achieved by taking the services of a recalibrated 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which is tuned to deliver 600 PS (592 bhp) of max output at 7,500rpm and 620 Nm (457 lb.-ft.) of peak torque available at between 5,500 rpm and 6,500 rpm. This power level is enough to send the new 600LT sprinting from nil to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds or as quick as the McLaren 675LT Super Series model. The new 600LT can also sprint from standstill to 200 km/h (124 mph) in only 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 328 km/h (204 mph).
Supporting this powerful engine are forged aluminum double wishbones and uprights, as adopted from the McLaren 720S. Boasting of a ride height lower by 8 mm than other Sports Series models, the McLaren 600LT features the braking system from the McLaren Super Series. As standard, the 600LT rides on 10-spoke ultra-lightweight aluminum alloy wheels shod with bespoke P Zero Trofeo R tires.
Inside, the McLaren 600LT features driver-focused cockpit that extensively employs lightweight Alcantara trim material. Since the 600LT has no carpet in the driver and passenger foot wells, the carbon fiber beauty of the MonoCell II chassis construction is left exposed to be admired.
The McLaren 600LT to be unveiled at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed will be wrapped in the signature McLaren Orange finish.
McLaren will commence production of the 600LT in October 2018. With strictly limited availability, the 600Lt will have a production run of around 12 months. Interested customers can now order the 600LT at a starting price of £185,500 with taxes in the United Kingdom.
