Not many car models can get away with retaining the look for many years. In fact, the only models we could think of are the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Though the G-Class’s latest variation, the W464, is supposed to debut in mid-January, official images of the boxy vehicle have already emerged in a Chinese website.
As mentioned earlier, the G-Class is one of the oldest designs we have seen, but it could still get away with it. And true enough the W464 still retains the Mercedes’ G-Class’ exterior design, just minus the old block, which was a good move for them. For 39 years, the automaker has kept virtually the same exterior appearance for the reputable off roader. The evolutionary design just makes perfect sense given the G-Class’ heritage.
Based on the photographs we saw, we cannot tell you much about the vehicle’s dimensions just yet. What we do know is that the new generation will most likely not be wider than the current W463 model that has been out since 1990. But even if the size will not increase, what we do know is that Mercedes has developed a more spacious cabin with its smarter packaging. Besides that, the new interior will have a technology infusion, which we have already known about for quite some time now.
The new W464 may look like a giant Lego piece to you, but do not expect it to be the same because nothing could be farther from the truth. True enough, the off-road prowess from the three differential locks, low range, and ladder-type frame will still be there, but a lot of its hardware bits have been upgraded too.
One of the new upgrades is the new double wishbone suspension that is a product of the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and AMG. Alongside that, there is also the new nine-speed automatic transmission that can convert the torque. There is also an updated rigid rear axle, a set of 18-inch all terrain tires, a 360-degree camera system, as well as some other things that we will learn about when the W464 makes its debut.
Of course, all these interior changes come with a number of new engine options as well for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. But as mentioned earlier, we will have to find out what the variants will be when it makes its first appearance at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
So for now, you guys can browse these leaked images that show the boxy exterior and the latest interior features.
