500,000th vehicle rolled off at Porsche’s production plant in Saxony

At Porsche’s production plant in Saxony, the 500,000th vehicle rolled off, suggesting that the Leipzig plant is on track to achieve more growth. This anniversary sports car is a white Cayenne with a V8 engine. Porsche’s apprentices assisted in converting this model into a command vehicle for the Leipzig fire brigade.

A ceremony took place where Matthias Müller, the President and CEO of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, presented the car keys to the Lord Mayor of the City as a token of the affiliation with Porsche’s Leipzig home. The production of a Cayenne in 2002 had started it all. Leipzig’s Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung, in his speech, talked about how Porsche’s decision to operate a plant in Leipzig has helped in the city’s development.

He pointed out that the fact that Leipzig has built 500,000 Porsches is proof of the strong performance of Porsche in the industrial site. He then added that he is looking forward to the “new, even larger Porsche plant.”

Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board Production and Logistics of Porsche AG, said that it will expand for a totally new model lineup, suggesting that Macan production will start at the end of 2013.

Porsche aims to turn the production facility into a fully-fledged plant with its own body assembly line and paint shop. The company is investing over 500 million euro and expects to create 1,000 new jobs in the medium term.

“Half a million vehicles in only ten years is a remarkable result for a luxury car manufacturer like Porsche. Behind the success is a strong workforce now numbering 1,005 employees at our production facility in Saxony. I am impressed by the high degree of technical expertise of our Leipzig colleagues. They send forth into the world the seal of quality ‘Made in Germany’ and with it a piece of Leipzig,” said Müller in his speech to high-ranking guests.
