Acura CDX might enter the US market

Article by Christian A., on May 2, 2017

Acura first introduced the CDX at the 2016 Auto China, and today it is being sold exclusively across their showrooms in China. But recent news from all over the web is saying that Acura is considering bringing the CDX to the United States.

What’s with the change of heart? John Ikeda, Vice President and General Manager of Acura US told Wards Auto in an interview (during a ’18 TLX media event) that the CDX seems like “a model that interests a lot of our people, so we have our R&D guys looking into the possibility”. He then added that it won’t be that simple as the CDX was designed especially for the Chinese market and this may not pass the United States regulatory standards. So it isn’t shipping that may cause problems but more of the regulatory requirements. However, this matter is currently under discussion.

The CDX is a small luxury CUV based on the Honda HR-V. Under the hood, the CDX has a turbocharged 1.5 liter four cylinder engine (the same engine found in a Civic and the CR-V) that produces 180 horsepower and 177 pound feet of torque, powered by an eight speed dual clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.

If it does reach the US soil, it will rival a number of small luxury crossovers like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA. And probably upcoming models like the Lexus UX and Cadillac XT4. The CDX has a base price of 229,800 RMB ($33,316), and is being built at the company’s ZengCheng factory in Guangzhou.

What Acura is missing out on right now, is the huge demand for SUVs that its rivals are benefiting from. Since the ZDX coupe-like CUV has been discontinued in 2013, the company only has two CUV models in the United States. These are the RDX and the much larger MDX. Currently, they don’t have anything to offer against the premium compact SUVs from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Furthermore, the Japanese luxury automaker has been experiencing a decline in sales of their sedans, like many other automakers. During the first quarter of 2017, their deliveries were down by almost half of the previous year. Even their RLX flagship sedan had fallen by 11.5 percent. This is why they are more convinced that they should export the CDX to the United States, to balance out the declining sales, if the CDX turns out to be a success outside Asia.

As for their other SUVs, the newer MDX will soon be having a plug-in hybrid option, while the RDX will also be getting an upgrade in terms of its design, and is due next year.
