Alfa Romeo Disco Volante is most appealing at Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d’Este

Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d'Este has named the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring as the most appealing vehicle in the “Concept Cars & Prototypes” class. Based on Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring was a perfect example of ideal blend of aesthetics, sporty highlights and other essential. It was crafted by the Milanese atelier using cutting-edge materials like carbon fiber and aluminum for minimal weight.

Each example of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is a fruit of over 4000 hours of high-skilled labor. The examples are built only upon request, and the first one was displayed at the Concorso while another two are bound for completion. Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring pays homage to the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante,” a distinctly made coupe built 60 years ago. The Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” was designed by Carrozzeria Touring in 1952, featuring extreme lightness and aerodynamic efficiency.

The impressive design of the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 earned it the nicknamed ‘Disco Volante,’ which means “Flying Saucer.” The Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” then became an icon of auto design. The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is underpinned by the same platform that carries the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. This light, rigid chassis allowed the atelier to create high-performance car in the persona of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring.

The platform of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring features a mid-front engine, transaxle gearbox and rear-wheel drive – a layout that provides an optimal 49-51% load distribution between the front and rear ends. The platform also features double-wishbone suspension, with forged aluminum uprights and supports as well as additional strut at the rearl.

The current version of the Disco Volante commemorates the legend that was the 1952 style icon. With the new design, it is able to get a good mix of aerodynamic qualities, emotion, and innovation, all of which have been placed into a fundamental and timeless form. The important words to remember are bold, daring, innovative, and refreshing.

During the development phases, the brand made sure to implement changes in many elements. For instance, the bonnet was placed on a higher position to aid with the ventilation of the engine bay. However, the original proportions were not changed so any modifications done can hardly be noticed. It is because of this that the new model is more extraordinary and more dramatic compared to the styling study that was revealed in 2012.

Louis de Fabribeckers, who is the Head of Design, said that during the development stage, his team met on a daily basis with the engineers. He added that the team made sure to focus on preserving the spirit of the design. He said further that once the design was chosen, the next issue was to look into the manufacturing problems and to find a way to address them without sacrificing the design.

In terms of the interior design, the Disco Volante remains in line with the main design philosophy and thus has that ‘science fiction” feel. The interior gives the impression of being in a “spaceship,” made possible by the combination of different elements like the LED light profiles in red. Aeronautics even served as the inspiration for a number of components like the instruments, adjustment lever of the seats, and the dashboard. For the upholstery, the bespoke leather hides were created to match the color shade of the exterior. These are then complemented with the Alcantara in black.
